Itmighthavebeenexpectedthat,onreachingphysiology,theStagiritewouldstandonfirmergroundthananyofhiscontemporaries.Such,however,isnotthecase.Asalreadyobserved,hisachievementsbelongentirelytothedominionofanatomyanddescriptivezoology.Thewholeinternaleconomyoftheanimalbodyis,accordingtohim,designedforthepurposeofcreatingandmoderatingthevitalheat;315andinapportioningtheirfunctionstothedifferentorgansheisentirelydominatedbythisfundamentalerror.ItwasacommonnotionamongtheGreeks,suggestedbysufficientlyobviousconsiderations,thatthebrainistheseatofthepsychicactivities.These,however,Aristotletransportstotheheart,which,inhissystem,notonlypropelsthebloodthroughthebody,butisalsothesourceofheat,thecommoncentrewherethedifferentspecialsensationsmeettobecompared,andtheorganofimaginationandofpassion.Thesolefunctionofthebrainistocooldowntheblood—apurposewhichthelungsalsosubserve.Somepersonsbelievethatairisakindoffood,andisinhaledinordertofeedtheinternalfire;buttheirtheorywouldinvolvetheabsurdconsequencethatallanimalsbreathe,forallhavesomeheat.AnaxagorasandDiogenesdid,indeed,makethatassertion,andthelatterevenwentsofarastosaythatfishbreathewiththeirgills,absorbingtheairheldinsolutionbythewaterpassedthroughthem—amisapprehension,saysAristotle,whicharosefromnothavingstudiedthefinalcauseofrespiration.201Hisphysiologicaltheoryofgenerationisequallyunfortunate.Inaccordancewithhismetaphysicalsystem,hereaftertobeexplained,hedistinguishestwoelementsinthereproductiveprocess,ofwhichone,thatcontributedbythemale,isexclusivelyformative;andtheother,thatcontributedbythefemale,exclusivelymaterial.Theprevalentopinionwasevidently,whatweknownowtobetrue,thateachparenthasbothaformativeandamaterialshareinthecompositionoftheembryo.Again,Aristotle,strangelyenough,regardsthegenerativeelementinbothsexesasanunappropriatedportionoftheanimal’snutriment,thelastandmostrefinedproductofdigestion,andthereforenotaportionoftheparentalsystematall;whileotherbiologists,anticipatingMr.Darwin’stheoryofpangenesisinaverywonderfulmanner,taughtthatthesemenisacon316fluxofmoleculesderivedfromeverypartofthebody,andthusstrovetoaccountforthehereditarytransmissionofindividualpeculiaritiestooffspring.202
