LetanyonesearchtheScriptures,andtheymustbeconvincedthatthisisthetruththereplainlytaught.ButwhatcanbemorepalpablycontradictorytoitthantosupposethatHeispresent,inbody,soul,anddivinity,intheformofthesmallpieceoflifelessbreadwhichwereceiveintheLord’sSupper?Inotherwords,thatthereisnotonlytheoneSaviourinheavenattherighthandofGod;butthattherearetwoorthreehundredlivingSaviourscollectedtogetheronthetableeverytimethattheLord’sSupperisadministered.Iamnotsurprisedifsomeofyoufeelshockedatsuchastatement,andIknowthatthereisenoughtoshockanyreligiousmind.Iamshockedatitmyself,andamsorrytohavetomakeit.Butthisistherealteachingofp.10theChurchofRome.ThedecreeoftheCouncilofTrentisasfollows:— “IfanymanshallsaythatthebodyandbloodoftheLordJesusChrist,togetherwithhissoulanddivinity,and,inshort,thatawholeChrist,isnotcontained,truly,really,andsubstantially,inthesacramentofthemostholyEucharist;butshallsaythatheisinitonlyinsign,orfigure,orpower,lethimbeanathema.”(Sess.xiii.Can.1.)Anotherdecreegoesontodeclare,“IfanymanshallsaythatintheHolySacramentoftheEucharist,ChristtheonlybegottenSonofGod,isnottobeadored,andthatoutwardlywiththeworshipoflatreia,andthatheoughtnottobecarriedsolemnlyaboutinprocessions,orthatheoughtnottobesetbeforethepeoplethathemaybeworshipped,andthattheworshippersofhimareidolaters,lethimbeanathema!”(Sess.xiii.Can.6.)[10]

Thesenseofreverencemaytakeawrongaswellasarightdirection.ItledJohnhimselftoworshipanangel,andtobringonhimselftheseverereproofwhichhehassofaithfullyrecorded,anditmayleadmisguidedmentogivethatwhichisnotGodtheworshipduetoGodalone.Butwhilewethinkthis,letnonefallshortinthedeepestreverence.NonecanadoreHimenough;nonecanbeholyenoughinHispresenceandatHisfeet.Butitp.17isthelivingSaviourattherighthandofGodwhomwewilladore.ItisthePrinceonthethrone,thePriestattherighthandoftheFather.Itistheliving,reigning,triumphantSaviour,“faraboveallprincipalitiesandpowers,andmightanddominion,andeverynamethatisnamed,notonlyinthisworld,butalsointhatwhichistocome;”andnotasmallpieceoflifelessbread,whichissaidtohavebeenturnedintoGodbythemiraculouspowersofapriest.

Butwemustnotleavethematterthere,foritisnotenoughforustobedeeplyconvincedp.31thatthedoctrineoftheMassisopposedtothewholetruthofGod,forsuchaconviction,thoughitmaykeepusclearofRome,willnot,ifitbeall,bringustoGod.Whatwewantisnotmerelyaconvictionofthetruth,butapersonalappropriationofitinourownhearts.Itisablessedthingtoknowthataperfectsacrificehasbeenoffered,andthatnofurthersacrificeiseithernecessaryorpossible;butthatknowledge,blessedasitis,mayleavetheheartdissatisfied,andtheconscienceillatease.Whenthatisthecase,wecannotbesurprisedatpersonsrestlesslyfeelingafteranythingthatpromisespeace;andIbelievethereisnostateofmindinwhichpersonsaresoliabletobeledawaybyRome,aswhentheconscienceisawakened,buttheheartnotatrestinChristtheSaviour.ItiswhenwecanlooktothatcrossofChrist,assuredthattheatonementtheremadewassufficientevenforus,andwhenwecanrestintheconvictionthat,becausetheatonementwassufficient,we,evenwe,arefree;andwhenwelearntorest,notonfeelings,notonsacraments,notonourdoingsofanykindwhatever,butsimplyonthegreat,grand,gloriousfact,thatafullpropitiationhasbeenmadeevenforthechiefofsinners,sothatwe,thoughthechiefp.32ofsinners,arenolongerundertheguiltofsin;thenitisthatwediscoverthestrengthoftherockunderourfeet,and,restingonit,weneednootherstay.Itisenough,forChristhathdied,andthroughHimGodisreconciled.Blessed!oh,blessedthatChristianbeliever,whocanthusrestinaperfectSaviour;andbekeptinperfectpeacethroughtheSaviour’sperfectwork!
