“NothinginmyhandIbring:

Now,onwhatdoesallthistremendousfabricrest?WhatisthereinthewordofGodtowarrantit?WhatisthereintheScripturesoftruthtogiveasanctiontosuchasystem?SofarasthewordofGodisconcernedallhangsontheonetext,“Thisismybodywhichisgivenforyou:thisdoinremembranceofme.”p.12TothesewordsRomanistsappealagainandagain,asiftheytaughtthedoctrine,whereasthemostcursorystudyofthedifferentpassagesinwhichtheyarecontainedissufficienttoshowthattheymeannothingofthekind.

ButhereaquestionwillariseinthemindsofallthosewhoreallydesiretomakethissacrificetotheLord,viz.Whatdoesitpracticallyinvolve?Whatistherealmeaningofit?Whatwillbethepracticalresultofsuchasacrificeinourownlifeandcharacter?Somewilltellusthatitinvolvesthenecessityofconventuallife,aseparationfromcommonduties,andtheseclusionofanunnery,orthevowsofasisterhood.Letanyonereadthischapterthrough,andhewillseeataglancethatthisisnotthemeaningoftheApostle.Therearenorulesthereforamonasticorder,butthereareveryfulldirectionsforcommonbusiness,andcommonlife.Allsuchideas,therefore,maybedismissedatonce.Thatisnotthemeaningofthesacrifice.Then,whatis?Whatp.36isthesacrificewhichwe,livingathome,aretooffertoGod?

Forthedecisionofthispoint,letuscomparethe18thand19thverses.Inv.18weread,— “Godhathgiventoustheministryofreconciliation.”Butinv.19thereisaslightvariation;butoneofgreatimportanceintheexpositionofthepassage;forwetherefind— “Hathcommittedtousthewordofreconciliation.”Thewordofreconciliation,therefore,isthesubstanceoftheministry:thegrandworkistomakeknowntheperfectreconciliationwroughtoutforusinChristJesus,toactontheexamplesetusbySt.Paulhimself,whenheburstoutinthegrandappealwhichfollows,andsaid,— “Now,then,weareambassadorsforChrist.AsthoughGoddidbeseechyoubyus,weprayp.63youinChrist’sstead,beyereconcileduntoGod.”

III.Butourthirdquestionstillremains,— “Inwhatway,orbywhatmeans,isthisgreatobjecttobeattained?”Iam,ofcourse,speakingofthehumaninstruments,andnotofthesovereignpowerofGodtheHolyGhost,withoutwhomnothingisstrong,andnothingholy.

Onethingisperfectlyclear,thatthesesacrificesarenotasupplementtotheonegreatsacrificeforsin.TheyarenotintendedtosupplyanydeficiencyinthegreatworkofourBlessedLord.Thereisnodeficiencythere;andiftherewere,nothingthatwecoulddowouldsupplyit.Thereisnodeficiency,forbythe“oneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Andifthereweredeficiency,howcouldmansupplyit?Istherenotsomethingdreadfulinthethoughtofapatchworkatonement,partlybytheSonofGodandpartlybyman;partlyperfect,andpartlyimperfect;partlypureinalltheinfinitepurityofGod,andpartlydefiledwithallthedefilementsofafallenandsinfulmanhood?No!thepropitiationisperfect,unmixed,andundefiledforever.ItisthesacrificeoftheSonofGod,anditstandsaloneforalleternity.Here,then,isourdelightfulassurance.Welookbacktotheworkofthecross,andthereseethewholeburdenofalloursinbornebyHim,andsoputawayforever.Weasknofurthersacrifice,forweknowthatHemadethereuponthecross“afull,perfect,andsufficientsacrifice,oblation,andsatisfaction,forthesinsofthewholeworld;”andwenowlooktoourBlessedSaviourasreigningandsaving.BecauseHereignsweknowthatallisrightlyordered,andbecauseHesaveswebelievethatweourselvesshallbesafeforeternity.Weseemanythingsintheworldthatarealtogetheropposedtowhatwethinkbest;butweknowthatGodhasputallthingsunderHisfeet,andgivenHimtobetheHeadoverallthingstoHisChurch;and,therefore,thatallisinHishand,andallwillworktogetherforgood.Wefinddeepsininourselves,andweknowhowhardathingitisreallytowalkwithGod.Wefinddefectinourprayers,defectinourfaith,defectinourservice,defectinourbestefforts,p.9defecteverywhere;butwelookuptoyonderthrone,andtherewefindalovingSaviour;onewhoknowsourdeepneed,—onewhohasdiedforus,—onewholovesus,—onewhocanfeelwithus,andwhovouchsafestoactasourPriestandAdvocate,sothatinthemidstofallourshortcomingsanddeficiencieswemay,inHisName,andthroughHismostpreciousblood,“comeboldlytotheThroneofGrace,thatwemayobtainmercy,andfindgracetohelpintimeofneed.”

     This,then,beingthecase,weseeatoncewhythereisnotmoreself-sacrificeforGod.Thereasonclearlyis,thatthereisawantofthedeepsenseofmercy.ThesacrificeofChristisnotsufficientlyrealised,andtheresultisthattheself-sacrificeiswithheld.Ifearthereisagreatwantofself-sacrificeevenamongthosewhoholdthetruth.Surelytherearemanywhosereligionnevercoststhemanyrealpersonalself-denial.Theypassthroughlifeeasilyandrespectably,butrefermattersmoretotheirp.44owninclinationthantothecallofGod.Theyaremorereadytopayotherstoworkthantoworkthemselves,andarepronetostandalooffromdistastefulservice,if,astheysay,itdoesnotsuitthem;or,astheymightsay,theydonotlikeit.So,again,butfewdenythemselvesingiving,andthoughmanyareliberal,therearefewwhosepersonalcomfortsarereallydiminishedbytheirliberality.Now,whyisthis?andhowisitthatthegreatsalvationhasnotmorepoweroverus?Isitnotthatthesalvationitselfisnotenoughfeltandappreciated?Itistrueofus,asitwasoftheCorinthians,that“weknowthegraceofourLordJesusChrist,who,thoughHewasrich,yetforoursakesbecamepoor,thatwethroughHispovertymightberich.”Butthoughweknowit,wedonotdeeplyfeelit.Itislikepaintlyingonthesurface,butitisnotburntintous,soastobecomepartandparcelofourselves.Everythingmaybecorrect;ourdoctrinescriptural,andourprinciplessound:butneitheronenortheotherhasgonehometotheinmostsoulwithsuchpowerthatwehavelearnedto“countallthingsbutlossfortheexcellencyoftheknowledgeofChristJesusourLord.”Whatisit,then,thatwewant?Whatp.45mustlieattherootofall?Amorepowerfulsenseofmercy,adeeperconvictionofneed,aclearerperceptionofwhatChristhasdoneforus,amorethoroughappreciationofHisperfectsacrifice;andwhenthatisgiven,weshallbebetterabletounderstandtheappeal,— “Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”
