ThestyleofSt.Paul's,and,indeed,ofallWren'schurches,isneitherGreciannorGothic,butItalian,influencedbythefashionwhichBernini,theItalianarchitectofLouisXIV.,hadintroducedintoFrance.ItisaclassofarchitectureofwhichtheGrecianisthebasis,butwhichissofreelyinnovateduponastoleavelittlegeneralresemblance.InitsdifferentpartswehavecolumnsandpilastersofeveryGrecianand,indeed,Romanorder,pediments,peristyles,architraves,andfriezes,mingledupwithwindowsofallsorts,andallkindsofrecessesandprojections,thefa?adesandintercolumniationsornamentedwithfestoons,andwreaths,andhumanmasks,andthewholesurmountedbyagreatEasterndome,andbycampanilespartakingof[159]allthecompilationsofthemainbuildings.St.Paul'sitselfisanoblebuilding,notwithstandingthemanifestgleaningsfromtheantiqueandthemedi?val,andtheircombinationintoawholewhichhasnothingoriginalbuttheircombinationintoonesuperbdesign.BesidesSt.Paul's,therestofWren'schurchesaredisappointing,andwecannotavoidlamentingthathehadlostthesenseofthebeautyofGothicarchitecture,especiallywhenwecalltomindtheexquisitechurchesofthatstylewhichadornsomanyoftheContinentalcities.WhilsttheexteriorsofWren'schurchesshowheavilyintheirhuddled-upsituationsinLondonstreets,theirinteriors,inwhichmuchmoreoftheGrecianandRomanstylesisintroduced,areequallyheavy,andwantinginthatpliantgracewhichdistinguishestheinteriorsofGothiccathedrals.PerhapsthenoblestworkofWrennexttoSt.Paul'sisGreenwichHospital,whichismorepurelyGrecian,andthereforedisplaysamoregracefulandmajesticaspect.ThePalaceofHamptonCourt,attachedtothefineoldTudorpileofCardinalWolsey,isagreatsquaremass,inwhichtheDutchtasteofWilliamissaidtohavesetasideWren'soriginaldesign.ButsurelyWilliamdidnotcompelhimtoerectthat(insuchcircumstances)ponderousbarbarismofaGreciancolonnadeinthesecondquadrangleofHamptonCourt,attachingittoaGothicbuilding.Infact,neitherWrennorInigoJonesappearstohavehadtheslightestsenseoftheincongruityofsuchconjunctions.JonesactuallyerectedaGrecianscreentothebeautifulGothicchoirofWinchesterCathedral,andplacedaGrecianbishop'sthroneinit,amidthegloriouscanopy-workofthatchoir.Thereturntoabettertastesweptthesemonstrositiesaway.APSLEYHOUSE,HYDEPARKCORNER,LONDON.

     Buthisgreatmeasure,atthisperiod,wastheblowaimedatthecommerceofBritain,andcomprisedinhiscelebratedBerlinDecrees,promulgatedonthe21stofNovember.HehadsubjugatednearlythewholeoftheEuropeanContinent.Spain,Portugal,ItalytothesouthofFrance,Belgium,Holland,Germany,andPrussiatothenorth,withnearlythewholeseaboardofEurope,wereunderhishandandhisarmies.HehadfoundthathecouldnotinvadeEngland;herfleethadrisentriumphant,hisownfleethaddisappearedlikeavapouratTrafalgar.As,therefore,hecouldnotreachhersoil,hedeterminedtodestroyherbydestroyinghercommerce,onwhichheimaginednotmerelyherprosperitybutherveryexistencedepended.AshewasmasterofnearlyallContinentalEurope,hesupposeditaseasyforhimtoexcludebyhisfiatthemerchandiseofBritain,astoputdownolddynastiesandsetupnewones.Hehadyetto[528]learnthatcommercehasaconqueringpowergreaterthanthateitherofmartialgeniusorofarms.
