ThefascinationexercisedbyPlotinuswasnotonlyintellectual,butpersonal.Singularlyaffable,obliging,andpatient,hewasalwaysreadytoanswerthequestionsofhisfriends,evenlayingasidehisworkinordertodiscussthedifficultieswhichtheybroughttohimforsolution.HislecturesweregiveninGreek;andalthoughthisalwaysremainedtohimaforeignlanguage,thepronunciationandgrammarofwhichhenevercompletelymastered,hisexpressionsfrequentlywonadmirationbytheirfelicityandforce;andtheeffectofhiseloquencewasstillfurtherheightenedbytheglowingenthusiasmwhichirradiatedhiswholecountenance,naturallyaverypleasingone,duringthedeliveryofthemoreimpressivepassages.410

WehavenowreachedapointinhistorywheretheGreekintellectseemstobestruckwithapartialparalysis,continuingforacenturyandahalf.Duringthatperiod,itsactivity鈥 攚hatthereisofit鈥 攊sshownonlyincriticismanderudition.Thereislearning,thereisresearch,thereisacuteness,thereisevengoodtaste,butoriginalityandeloquenceareextinct.Isitacoincidence,orisitsomethingmore,thatthisintervalofsterilityshouldoccursimultaneouslywiththemostsplendidperiodofLatinliterature,andthatthenewbirthofGreekcultureshouldbefollowedbythedecrepitudeanddeathoftheLatinmuse?ItiscertainthatinmodernEurope,possessingasitdoessomanyindependentsourcesofvitality,theflowering-timesofdifferentcountriesrarelycoincide;EnglandandSpain,fromthemiddleofthesixteenthtothemiddleoftheseventeenthcentury,beingtheonlyinstancesthatwecanrecalloftwocountriesalmostsimultaneouslyreachingthehighestpointoftheirliterarydevelopment.Possibly,duringthegreatageofLatinliterature,allthemostaspiringGreeksfoundemploymentastutorsinRomanfamilies;whilethereadingpublicoftheWestweretoomuchabsorbedbythemasterpiecescomposedintheirownlanguage,166ortooelatedwiththeconsciousnessofanewsuperiority,toencouragetherivalryofthosefromwhomtheyhadwrestednotonlypoeticalindependence,butalso,whattillthenhadneverbeendisputedwiththeGreeks,supremedominionintheworldofmind.Itis,atanyrate,significantthatwhileGreekwasthefavouritelanguageofRomanloversinthetimeofLucretiusandagaininthetimeofJuvenal,therearenoallusionstoitshavingbeenemployedbythemduringtheintermediateperiod.264Bethisasitmay,fromthefalloftheRepublictothetimeofTrajan,philosophy,likepoetryandeloquence鈥 攐ratleastallphilosophythatwaspositiveandpractical鈥 攂ecamedomiciledinRome,andreceivedthestampoftheRomancharacter.HowStoicismwasaffectedbythechangehasbeenpointedoutinaformerchapter.WhatwehavenowtostudyischieflythereactionofRomeontheGreekmind,anditsbearingonthesubsequentdevelopmentofthought.

TheGreekloveofbalancedantithesisandcircumscribingformtriumphedovertheinfiniteinbothfields.Whilethetwogreatmastersofidealismimprisonedtheformlessandturbulentterrestrialelementswithinauniformandeternalsphereofcrystal,theyimposedasimilarrestraintonthedesiresandemotions,confiningthemwithinabarrierofreasonwhich,whenonceerected,couldneverbebrokenthrough.Andalthoughthegroundwoninphysicswaslostagainforatimethrougharevivalofoldtheories,thiswasbecausetrueHellenismfounditsonlycongenialspherein399ethics,andtherethephilosophyofthefinitecontinuedtoreignsupreme.IfthesuccessorsofAristotlefellbackoncosmologiesofamplerscopethanhis,theyretainedhislimitingmethodintheirspeculationsonman.

Inviewofsuchtendencies,onehardlyknowshowmuchconfidenceistobeplacedinPorphyry鈥 檚well-knownpictureofhismasterasonewholivedsoentirelyforspiritualintereststhatheseemedashamedofhavingabodyatall.Wearetoldthat,asaconsequenceofthisfeeling,heavoidedthesubjectofhispastlife,refusedtolethisportraitbepainted,neglectedthecareofhishealth,andrigorouslyabstainedfromanimalfood,evenwhenitwasprescribedforhimundertheformofmedicine.424Allthismaybetrue,butitisnotveryconsistentwiththespecialdoctrinesofPlotinusasrecordedinhiswritings,norshoulditbeallowedtoinfluenceourinterpretationofthem.Inhispersonalcharacterandconducthemayhaveallowedhimselftobecarriedawaybytheprevalentasceticismandsuperstitionoftheage;inhisphilosophyheisguidedbythehealthiertraditionsofPlatoandAristotle,andstandsindeclaredoppositiontothemysticismwhichwasanegationofNatureandoflife.

Possiblytheworldmaymove,andpossiblyitmaybeatrest.Possiblyitmayberound,orelseitmaybetriangular,orhaveanyothershape.Possiblythesunandthestarsmaybeextinguishedatsetting,andbelightedafreshattheirrising:itis,however,equallypossiblethattheymayonlydisappearundertheearthandreappearagain,orthattheirrisingandsettingisduetoyetothercauses.Possiblythewaxingandwaningofthemoonmaybecausedbythemoon鈥 檚revolving;oritmaybeduetotheatmosphericchange,ortoanactualincreaseordecreaseinthemoon鈥 檚size,ortosomeothercause.Possiblythemoonmayshinewithborrowedlight,oritmayshinewithitsown,experiencesupplyinguswithinstancesofbodieswhichgivetheirownlight,andofotherswhichhavetheirlightborrowed.FromtheseandsuchlikestatementsitappearsthatquestionsofnaturalscienceinthemselveshavenovalueforEpicurus.Whilstgrantingthatonlyonenaturalexplanationofphenomenaisgenerallypossible,yetinanyparticularcaseitisperfectlyindifferentwhichexplanationisadopted.169

    TheteleologyofAristotlerequiresawordofexplanation,whichmayappropriatelyfinditsplaceinthepresentconnexion.InspeakingofapurposeinNature,hedoesnotmeanthatnaturalproductionssubserveanendlyingoutsidethemselves;asif,touseGoethe鈥 檚illustration,thebarkofcork-treeswasintendedtobemadeintostoppersforginger-beerbottles;butthatineveryperfectthingthepartsareinterdependent,andexistforthesakeofthewholetowhichtheybelong.Nordoeshe,likesomanytheologians,bothancientandmodern,arguefromtheevidenceofdesigninNaturetotheoperationofadesigningintelligenceoutsideher.Notbelievinginanycreationatallapartfromworksofart,hecouldnotbelieveinacreativeintelligenceotherthanthatofman.Hedoes,indeed,constantlyspeakofNatureasifshewereapersonalprovidence,continuallyexertingherselfforthegoodofhercreatures.But,onlookingalittlecloser,wefindthattheagencyinquestioniscompletelyunconscious,andmaybeidentifiedwiththeconstitutionofeachparticularthing,orratherofthetypetowhichitbelongs.WehavesaidthatAristotle鈥 檚intellectwasessentiallydescriptive,andwehavehereanotherillustrationofitscharacteristicquality.333Theteleologywhichheparadeswithsomuchpompaddsnothingtoourknowledgeofcauses,impliesnothingthatapositivistneednotreadilyaccept.Itisamerestudyoffunctions,ananalysisofstaticalrelations.Ofcourse,iftherewerereallyanyphilosopherswhosaidthattheconnexionbetweenteethandmasticationwasentirelyaccidental,theAristoteliandoctrinewasausefulprotestagainstsuchanabsurdity;butwhenwehaveestablishedafixedconnexionbetweenorganandfunction,weareboundtoexplaintheassociationinsomemoresatisfactorymannerthanbyreaffirmingitingeneralterms,whichisallthatAristotleeverdoes.Again,whatevermaybetherelativejustificationofteleologyasastudyoffunctionsinthelivingbody,wehavenogroundsforinterpretingthephenomenaofinorganicnatureonananalogousprinciple.SomeGreekphilosopherswereacuteenoughtoperceivethedistinction.Whileadmittingthatplantsandanimalsshowedtracesofdesign,theyheldthattheheavenlybodiesarosespontaneouslyfromthemovementsofavortexorsomesuchcause;222justascertainreligioussavantsofourowndayrejecttheDarwiniantheorywhileacceptingthenebularhypothesis.223ButtoAristotletheunbrokenregularityofthecelestialmovements,whichtousisthebestproofoftheirpurelymechanicalnature,was,onthecontrary,aproofthattheywereproducedanddirectedbyanabsolutelyreasonablepurpose;muchmoresoindeedthanterrestrialorganisms,markedasthesearebyoccasionaldeviationsandimperfections;andheconcludesthateachofthosemovementsmustbedirectedtowardstheattainmentofsomecorrespondinglyconsummateend;224while,again,indealingwiththoseprecursorsofMr.Darwin,ifsuchtheycanbecalled,whoarguedthattheutilityofanorgandoesnotdisproveitsspontaneousorigin,sinceonlythecreatureswhich,byahappyaccident,cametopossessitwouldsurvive鈥 攈e334answersthattheconstantreproductionofsuchorgansisenoughtovindicatethemfrombeingtheworkofchance;225thusdisplayinghisinabilitytodistinguishbetweenthetwoideasofuniformcausationanddesign.
