Thismatterofshrinkageisindeedtheonlyconditioninpattern-makingwhichisgovernedbyanythingnearaconstantrule,andevenshrinkagerequiressometimestobevariedtosuitspecialcases.Forsmallpatternswhosedimensionsdonotexceedonefootinanydirection,rappingwillgenerallymakeupforshrinkage,andnoallowanceisrequiredinthepatterns,butpattern-makersaresopartialtotheruleofshrinkage,astheonlyconstantoneintheirwork,thattheyareaversetoadmittingexceptions,andusuallykeeptotheshrinkruleforallpieces,whetherlargeorsmall.

Asremarked,everyattempttogenerateanythingnewinmachineryshouldbecommencedbyascertainingawantofimprovement.Whensuchawanthasbeenascertained,attentionshouldbedirectedfirsttotheprinciplesuponwhichsuchwantorfaultistoberemedied.Propermechanismcanthenbesuppliedlikethemissinglinksinachain.Propositionsthusstatedmayfailtoconveythemeaningintended;thissystematicplanofinventingmaybebetterexplainedbyanexample.

Once,nearlyallmechanicalknowledgewasoftheclasstermedspecial,andshopmanipulationsweregovernedbyempiricalrulesandthearbitraryopinionsoftheskilled;anapprenticeenteredashoptolearnanumberofmysteriousoperations,whichcouldnotbedefineduponprinciples,andonlyunderstoodbyspecialpracticeandexperiment.Thearrangementandproportionsofmechanismwerealsodeterminedbytheopinionsoftheskilled,andlikethemanipulationoftheshop,wereoftenhidfromtheapprentice,andwhathecarriedinhismemoryattheendofanapprenticeshipwasallthathehadgained.Thetendencyofthiswastoelevatethosewhowerethefortunatepossessorsofastrongnaturalcapacity,andtodepressthepositionofthoselessfortunateinthematterofmechanical"genius,"asitwascalled.Theabilitytoprepareproperdesigns,andtosucceedinoriginalplans,wasattributedtoakindofintuitivefacultyofthemind;inshort,themechanicartswerefiftyyearsagosurroundedbyasuperstitionofadifferentnature,butinitsinfluencesthesameassuperstitioninotherbranchesofknowledge.

Asremarked,everyattempttogenerateanythingnewinmachineryshouldbecommencedbyascertainingawantofimprovement.Whensuchawanthasbeenascertained,attentionshouldbedirectedfirsttotheprinciplesuponwhichsuchwantorfaultistoberemedied.Propermechanismcanthenbesuppliedlikethemissinglinksinachain.Propositionsthusstatedmayfailtoconveythemeaningintended;thissystematicplanofinventingmaybebetterexplainedbyanexample.

Toanexperiencedmechanicasingleglanceatthetoolsonalatheisasufficientcluetotheskilloftheoperator.Ifthetoolsaregroundreadytouse,ofthepropershape,andplacedinordersoastobereachedwithoutdelay,thelathemanmayatoncebesetdownashavingtwoofthemainqualificationsofafirst-classworkman,whichareorder,andaknowledgeoftools;whileonthecontrary,alatheboardpiledfullofoldwaste,clampbolts,andbrokentools,showsawantofthatsystemandorder,withoutwhichnoamountofhandskillcanmakeanefficientworkman.
