Presumingthereadertorememberwhatwassaidofsteamhammersinanotherplace,andtobefamiliarwiththeusesandgeneralconstructionofsuchhammers,letitbesupposedsteam-hammers,withtheordinaryautomaticvalveaction,thosethatgiveanelasticorsteam-cushionedblow,arewellknown.Supposefurtherthatbyanalysingtheblowsgivenbyhammersofthiskind,itisdemonstratedthatdeadblows,suchasaregivenwhenahammercomestoafullstopinstriking,aremoreeffectualincertainkindsofwork,andthatsteam-hammerswouldbeimprovedbyoperatingonthisdead-strokeprinciple.[93]

3.Twoelevationstakenatrightanglestoeachother,fixallpoints,andgivealldimensionsofpartsthathavetheiraxisparalleltotheplanesonwhichtheviewsaretaken;butwhenamachineiscomplex,orwhenseveralpartslieinthesameplane,threeandsometimesfourviewsarerequiredtodisplayallthepartsinacomprehensivemanner.

Thesubjectisanintricateone,andhasbeensomuchaffectedbytheinfluenceofmachineimprovement,andacorrespondingdecreaseinwhatmaybecalledspecialknowledge,thatrulesandpropositionswhichwouldfiftyyearsagoapplytotheconditionsofapprenticeship,willatthepresentdaybewrongandunjust.Viewedinacommercialsense,asanexchangeofconsiderationsorvalues,apprenticeshipcanberegardedlikeotherengagements;yet,whatanapprenticegivesaswellaswhathereceivesarealiketooconditionalandindefinitetobeestimatedbyordinarystandards.Anapprenticeexchangesunskilledorinferiorlabourfortechnicalknowledge,orfortheprivilegeandmeansofacquiringsuchknowledge.Themasterispresumedtoimpartakindofspecialknowledge,collectedbyhimatgreatexpenseandpains,inreturnforthegainderivedfromtheunskilledlabourofthelearner.Thisspecialknowledgegivenbythemastermaybeimpartedinalongerorshortertime;itmaybethorough[20]andvaluable,ornotthorough,andalmostuseless.Theprivilegesofashopmaybesuchastooffsetalargeamountofvaluablelabouronthepartoftheapprentice,ortheseprivilegesmaybeofsuchacharacterastobeofbutlittlevalue,andteachinferiorplansofperformingwork.

Byexaminingautomatichammersitwillbefoundthattheirvalvesareconnectedtothedropbymeansoflinks,producing[162]coincidentmovementofthepistonandvalve,andthatthemovementofoneiscontingentuponandgovernedbytheother.Itwillalsobefoundthattheseconnectionsorlinksarecapableofextension,soastoaltertherelativepositionofthepistonandvalve,therebyregulatingtherangeoftheblow,butthatthemovementofthetwoisreciprocalorinunison.Reasoninginductively,notdiscoveringorinventing,itmaybedeterminedthattosecureastampblowofahammer-head,thevalvemustnotopenoradmitsteambeneaththepistonuntilablowiscompletedandthehammerhasstopped.

Thereis,however,aprincipleinhydraulicmachinerythatmustbetakenintoaccount,incomparingitwithpositivelygearedmechanism,whichoftenleadstolossofpowerthatinmanycaseswilloverbalanceanygainderivedfromthepeculiaractionofhydraulicapparatus.Ialludetothelossofpowerincidenttodealingwithaninelasticmedium,wheretheamountofforceexpendedisconstant,regardlessoftheresistanceoffered.Ahydrauliccrane,forinstance,consumespowerinproportiontoitsmovements,andnotastheamountofdutyperformed;ittakesthesamequantityofwatertofillthecylindersofsuchcranes,whetherthewaterexertmuchorlittleforceinmovingthepistons.Thedifferencebetweenemployingelasticmediumslikeairandsteam,andaninelasticmediumlikewater,fortransmittingforceinperformingirregularduty,hasbeenalreadyalludedto,andformsaveryinterestingstudyforastudentinmechanics,leading,asitdoes,tothesolutionofmanyproblemsconcerningtheuseandeffectofpower.

Fourth.Thearrangementofthepartsofacombinationmachinehavetobemodifiedbytherelationsbetweenthem,insteadofbeingadapteddirectlytotheworktobeperformed.1.Thespoutingforceofwateristheoreticallyequaltoitsgravity.
