“【pLy4】北京赛车713997期”Buttheministryofthewordmustalsohaveitspubliccharacter,andthegladtidingsofreconciliationmustbepubliclypreachedtoaruinedworld.ItwasthisthatappearedtobetheprominentideaintheApostle’smindwhenhespokeoftheministryofreconciliation;forheatonceproceededtogiveaspecimenofitinthegreatappealwhichimmediatelyfollows:— “NowthenweareambassadorsforChrist,asthoughGoddidbeseechyoubyus:weprayyouinChrist’sstead,beyereconciledtoGod.Forhehathmadehimtobesinforus,whoknewnosin;thatwemightbemadetherighteousnessofGodinhim.”(2Cor.v.20,21.)ButIdonotdenythatthetextisoneofconsiderabledifficulty.Thefirstgreatdifficultyistoascertaintowhomthewordswerespoken.FromLuke,xxiv.33,wefindthatthepersonspresentwere“theeleven,andthemthatwerewiththem;”andthereisnothingintherecordtodecidewhetherthewordswereaddressedtotheelevenApostlesseparately,ortothewholecompany—including,ofcourse,laymenandwomen.Myownbeliefis,thattheywereaddressedtotheelevenseparately,andconveyedaspecialjudicialpowertotheseinspiredmen.Thattheypossessedsuchapowerp.59isclearfromhistory;forwhenPeterretainedthesinofAnaniasandSapphira,Godratifiedhisdecisionbytheirdeath;andwhenSt.PaulpassedsentenceontheincestuouspersonatCorinth,heclearlyclaimedasupernaturalpowerofjudgmentwhenhesaid(1Cor.v.3-5),“ForIverily,asabsentinbodybutpresentinspirit,havejudgedalready,asthoughIwerepresent,concerninghimthathathsodonethisdeed.InthenameofourLordJesusChrist,whenyearegatheredtogether,andmyspirit,withthepowerofourLordJesusChrist,todeliversuchanoneuntoSatanforthedestructionoftheflesh,thatthespiritmaybesavedinthedayoftheLordJesus.”Sowhenheremittedthesamesentenceheclearlyclaimedspecialrighttodoso;ashesaid,“IfIforgaveanything,towhomIforgaveit,foryoursakesforgaveIit,inthepersonofChrist.”Butifthiswerethecase,andifthepowerwasgiventotheApostlesasapartoftheirapostolicoffice,itfollowsthatwiththeApostlesitmusthaveceasedforever.Accordingly,inourLord’swordsthereisnotthesmallesthintattransmission;andasfortheideathattheApostlescouldtransmitittotheBishops,andtheBishopstothePresbyters,itisaltogetherwithoutfoundationp.60inthewordofGod.Infact,thecaseoftheCorinthiansprovesclearlythatitwasnotsotransmitted.Therecannotbeadoubt,thatwhentheepistlewaswrittentherewerePresbytersintheChurchofCorinth;anditisclearthatTitushadjustbeenthereonaspecialmission,forheitwaswhobroughttoSt.PaulthetidingsoftherepentanceoftheCorinthians(2Cor.vii.6,7,andxii.17,18).Butyetnoneofthesepersonsappeartohavehadatransmittedpower.ItwasnecessarytoreferthecasetoSt.Paulhimself.Heretainedandheremitted;andhedidboth“inthepersonofChrist.”

III.Butourthirdquestionstillremains,— “Inwhatway,orbywhatmeans,isthisgreatobjecttobeattained?”Iam,ofcourse,speakingofthehumaninstruments,andnotofthesovereignpowerofGodtheHolyGhost,withoutwhomnothingisstrong,andnothingholy.

Nowallthisiscomplete—itisfinished;itwasaDivineact,andmancanaddnothingtoit.But,notwithstandingallthisboundlessmercy,manremainsunchanged—asinnerstill,andanalienfromGod.ThoughbyatonementGodislegallyreconciledtohim,heremains,throughignoranceandhardnessofheart,unreconciledtoGod;asfarfromlife,therefore,asifnothinghadeverbeendoneforhissalvation.Andnowyouseeatoncetheofficeoftheministry.Theministerofreconciliationistobethebearertohisfellow-sinnersofthegreatreconciliationwroughtoutforusinChristJesus.HeisemployedbytheHolyGhostasahumaninstrumentforbringingthosewhoarestillunreconciledintothesacredprivilegeofreconciliationwithGod.SinnersreconciledtoGod,therefore,arethegreatresultoftheministry.Itisverydelightfultoseeafullchurchandattentivecongregation;veryencouragingtoseelargeschoolswelltaughtandwellfilled—averygreatcauseofthankfulnesstoseekindnessp.55andgoodfeelingprevailinginaparish.Butallthesethingsfallshortofthegreatresult.TherealresultisthereconciliationofprecioussoulstotheLordJesusChristbythebloodofatonementshedfortheirsinsonthecross.TherealresultisconversiontoGod,anewbirthbythepoweroftheHolyGhost;andifthatbewanting,thoughallbesideseemprosperous,theministerofreconciliationshouldbebroughtonhiskneeswithgreatsearchingofheart,andneverresttillhecanlookonprecioussoulsreconciledtoGod,towhomhemaysay,asSt.PauldidtotheCorinthians,“Suchweresomeofyou:butyearewashed,butyearesanctified,butyearejustifiedinthenameoftheLordJesus,andbytheSpiritofourGod.”ThesecondisfromtherubricintheservicefortheVisitationoftheSick,whereweread— “Hereshallthesickpersonbemovedtomakeaspecialconfessionofhissins,ifhefeelhisconsciencetroubledwithanyweightymatter.”

Such,then,isthecontrast,andsuchthereasonforit.What,then,arewetothinkoftheteachingoftheChurchofRomewhenitsays,— “InthisdivinesacrificewhichisperformedintheMass,thatsameChristiscontained,andsacrificedwithoutblood,whoonce,withblood,offeredHimselfuponthealtaroftheCross?”[27]Andagain:— “Ifanymanshallsaythatthesacrificeisnotpropitiatory,andprofitsthereceiveronly,andoughtnottobeofferedforthelivingandthedead,forsins,punishments,satisfaction,andothernecessities,lethimbeanathema?”Now,whatdothesepassagesteach?

Andletmeadd,thatIbelievetherearemanytroubledconscienceswhowouldfindgreatassistanceintheirdifficultiesiftheyactedmoreontheadviceoftheCommunionService.Itisahardthingtobearaburdenalone,andIamthoroughlypersuadedtherearemanywhomightfindgreathelpunderseriousandpainfuldifficultiesfromtheconfidentialopeningoftheheart’swoundtoaclergymanorChristianp.66friend.Ihaveknownmanysuchcases,andIbelievethatourjustdreadoftheRomishconfessional—andnoonecandreaditmorethanIdo—combinedwithournationalshynessofcharacter,cutsoffmanyfromthatwhichmightbeanimportanthelptothemintheiranxiousstruggleforthepeaceofGod.Inthispresentworldweareinamixedcondition,andhowevertrulywemaybewalkingwithGod,thereistheoldmanandtheoldnatureleft.ItisjustthesamewithusasitwasofoldwithCanaan.Israelhadtakenpossession,buttheCanaaniteswerestillintheland.So,evenwhentheLordJesushastakenpossessionoftheheart,therearesinsstillabidingthere—tempers,lusts,covetousness,selfishness,pride,andathousandothers—someprevailinginonecharacterandsomeinanother.NowofallthesetheChristianmanmustbepreparedtomakeasacrifice—histemper,hispride,hisambition,hiscovetousness,hisself-love;hemustbepreparedtobringalltothealtar,withoutmercyandwithoutreserve.Thus,inCol.iii.5,St.PauladdressesthosewhoarerisenwithChrist,andsays,“Mortifytherefore,”orputtodeath,orsacrifice,“yourmemberswhichareoftheflesh:fornication,uncleanness,inordinateaffection,evilconcupiscence,andcovetousness,whichisidolatry.”Thereisnooccasiontobeshutupwithinthewallsofanunneryforthis;norwillthewallsofanunneryp.37intheleasthelpustoit,fortheyarejustaseffectualinshuttingsininasinshuttingitout.Hereisworkforhomelife,andforallclassesinhomelife—forhusbandsandwives,parentsandchildren,mastersandservants:weallhaveourgreattemptations,soweallhavetothrowourselvesheartandsoulintothegreatstruggle,andwithanunsparinghanddealresolutelywithbesettingsin.

p.6ThewordsteachusthatatthepresenttimeourBlessedLordandSaviourisattherighthandofGod,andtheysuggesttwosubjects,Hisplace,andHisemployment.

II.Such,then,isthecontrast;andnowletusturn,inthesecondplace,tothereasonofit.Whywerethoseancientsacrificessooftenrepeated?andwhywasoursonceandforever?Thesamepassagethatbringsoutthecontrastexplainsthereasonofit;andthereasonisthat,p.24inthemselves,theyhavenosavingpower,andthatourshas.Theywereineffectualfortheblottingoutofsin,buttheoneofferingofourBlessedLordwasperfectlyeffectualintheverypointwheretheyfailed.Therewasasgreatacontrastinrespectofefficiencyastherewasinrespectoffrequency;and,infact,therepetitionwastheresultofweakness,astheonenesswastheresultofcompletesufficiency.Thisinsufficiencyisplacedintwopointsofviewinthechapter,forwearetheretaught,first,thatthesesacrificescouldnottakeawaysin,and,secondly,thattheycouldnotsatisfytheconscience.

Inthispresentworldweareinamixedcondition,andhowevertrulywemaybewalkingwithGod,thereistheoldmanandtheoldnatureleft.ItisjustthesamewithusasitwasofoldwithCanaan.Israelhadtakenpossession,buttheCanaaniteswerestillintheland.So,evenwhentheLordJesushastakenpossessionoftheheart,therearesinsstillabidingthere—tempers,lusts,covetousness,selfishness,pride,andathousandothers—someprevailinginonecharacterandsomeinanother.NowofallthesetheChristianmanmustbepreparedtomakeasacrifice—histemper,hispride,hisambition,hiscovetousness,hisself-love;hemustbepreparedtobringalltothealtar,withoutmercyandwithoutreserve.Thus,inCol.iii.5,St.PauladdressesthosewhoarerisenwithChrist,andsays,“Mortifytherefore,”orputtodeath,orsacrifice,“yourmemberswhichareoftheflesh:fornication,uncleanness,inordinateaffection,evilconcupiscence,andcovetousness,whichisidolatry.”Thereisnooccasiontobeshutupwithinthewallsofanunneryforthis;norwillthewallsofanunneryp.37intheleasthelpustoit,fortheyarejustaseffectualinshuttingsininasinshuttingitout.Hereisworkforhomelife,andforallclassesinhomelife—forhusbandsandwives,parentsandchildren,mastersandservants:weallhaveourgreattemptations,soweallhavetothrowourselvesheartandsoulintothegreatstruggle,andwithanunsparinghanddealresolutelywithbesettingsin.

Thesenseofreverencemaytakeawrongaswellasarightdirection.ItledJohnhimselftoworshipanangel,andtobringonhimselftheseverereproofwhichhehassofaithfullyrecorded,anditmayleadmisguidedmentogivethatwhichisnotGodtheworshipduetoGodalone.Butwhilewethinkthis,letnonefallshortinthedeepestreverence.NonecanadoreHimenough;nonecanbeholyenoughinHispresenceandatHisfeet.Butitp.17isthelivingSaviourattherighthandofGodwhomwewilladore.ItisthePrinceonthethrone,thePriestattherighthandoftheFather.Itistheliving,reigning,triumphantSaviour,“faraboveallprincipalitiesandpowers,andmightanddominion,andeverynamethatisnamed,notonlyinthisworld,butalsointhatwhichistocome;”andnotasmallpieceoflifelessbread,whichissaidtohavebeenturnedintoGodbythemiraculouspowersofapriest.

p.21WithallthistheApostlecontraststheoneperfectsacrificeofourblessedLord,madeonthecrossonceandforever.Therearenolessthansixplacesinwhichhebringsoutthisonepoint,andbringsitoutwithsuchclearnessthatitreallyseemsasifthewholepassagewaswrittenasapropheticsafeguardagainstthedoctrineofthemass.InHeb.ix.25,26,hesays:“Noryetthatheshouldofferhimselfoften,asthehighpriestenterethintotheholyplaceeveryyearwithbloodofothers;forthenmustheoftenhavesufferedsincethefoundationoftheworld:butnowonceintheendoftheworldhathheappearedtoputawaysinbythesacrificeofhimself.”Soinvv.27,28,hedrawsacomparisonbetweenthedeathoftheLordJesusandthenaturaldeathofman,andsays:“Asitisappointeduntomenoncetodie,butafterthisthejudgment:soChristwasonceofferedtobearthesinsofmany;anduntothemthatlookforhimshallheappearthesecondtimewithoutsinuntosalvation.”Sothatitwouldbejustasabsurdtoexpectmentodietwice,astobelievethattherecanbeanysecondofferingoftheLordJesusChristforsin.TheonedeaththroughoutmankindisthetypeorpatternoftheoneSacrificeoncep.22madeforsin.So,again,inx.10,weread,— “BythewhichwillwearesanctifiedthroughtheofferingofthebodyofJesusChristonceforall.”Andagain,invv,11,12,St.PaulreturnstothecontrastbetweenourLordandtheJewishpriest,andsays,“Everyprieststandethdailyministeringandofferingoftentimesthesamesacrifices,whichcannevertakeawaysins:butthisman,afterhehadofferedonesacrificeforsinsforever,satdownontherighthandofGod.”Andoncemore,inver.14,hesumsupallbysaying,“ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Itwouldbeamatterofdeepinteresttostudycarefullythemeaningoftheword“perfected”inthismostimportanttext.Itdoesnotmeanperfectinpersonalholiness,i.e.intheinwardworkoftheSpiritonthesoul;butperfectinjustification:perfect,becausethecursewasperfectlyblottedout,thelawbeingperfectlysatisfied,andthesinner,afterpropitiation,perfectlyfree.Butwemustnotstoptodwellonthatnow,ouronepointatpresentisthatthesacrificeoftheLordJesuswasonce,andforever;andthisismostremarkablybroughtoutinthewords,— “ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”

3.Oncemore:thesacrificeinvolvesthefreegiftofmoney.Moneywithmostmenliesveryneartheheart.Opentheheart,andyouopenthepurse.Lettheheartbecomedull,lifeless,cold,andunfeeling,andthepursesooncloses.ThusthesacrificeofSelfisalmostsuretoleadtotheofferingofmoney.Coldheartsgivelittle;butwhentheheartisfulltheofferingsflowfreely.ThemenofMacedoniawerepoorpeople,butnosoonerhadtheygiventheirownselvestotheLordthan“theabundanceoftheirjoy,andtheirdeeppoverty,aboundeduntotherichesoftheirliberality.”Nowtheseofferingsp.39aredescribedintheScripturesasasacrificetoGod.St.Paulalludestothem,inPhilip,iv.18.Itisnotperfectlyclearwhetherhealludestoacontributiontowardshisownmaintenance,ortothecollectioninwhichhetooksodeepaninterestforthepoorsaintsinJerusalem;but,eitherway,hedescribestheofferingsasanodourofasweetsmell,a“sacrificeacceptable,wellpleasingtoGod.”ThisgivesadelightfulviewofcontributionsinarightspiritfortheserviceoftheLord.ItshowsthatthefreeandgenerousgivertherebyoffersasacrificewellpleasingtoGod.Itrebukesatthesametimetheniggardlyandparsimoniousspirit,thespiritthatgivesreluctantly,andcomplainsofmanycalls.YetIverilybelievethattogivefreelycanscarcelybecalledasacrifice,fornomoneygivessomuchpleasureasthatfreelyofferedtotheLord’sservice;andnopeopleenjoypropertysomuchastheydowhoarefreeandopen-heartedgivers.Ihavenottheslightesthesitation,therefore,inappealingtoyouforfreeandgenerousofferings,forIcansayasSt.Paulsaid(Philip,iv.17),“Idesirefruitthatmayaboundtoyouraccount;”andIamthoroughlypersuaded,thatnopersonwhoisinducedtogivefreelywilleverrepentofp.40“asacrificeacceptableandwellpleasingtoGod.”

     Therearemanypointsofdeepinstructioninthispassage,butwehavenottimetodwellonthem.Hereisthefoundationofthewholemessage,viz.adoubleimputation—theimputationofsintotheLordJesus,andtheimputationofrighteousnesstoallthatareinHim.p.67Thereisthetenderearnestnessofentreaty,whichdoesnotmerelylaythemessagebeforethesinnerandleaveitthere,butwithacompassionateurgencyintheLord’snamebeseechesandentreats.Andthereisthemostremarkablefact,thatthesewordsarenotaddressedtotheheathen,ortothosewhohadneverheardofChrist;buttoaChurchofprofessingbelievers,allbaptizedintothenameofJesus:sothatwearebroughttotheconclusion,thatamongstthebaptizedChristiansintheChurchofCorinththerewerethosetowhomitwasstillneedfultomaketheappeal— “WebeseechyouinChrist’sstead,beyereconciledtoGod.”Doesnotthatfactteachus,thatamongstourselvesthesamemessagemaybeequallynecessary,andthat,althoughweareallbaptized,andallprofessingChristians,thereareyetthoseamongstuswhomustbebroughtbacktothegreatelementaryquestionoftheirreconciliationtoGod;fortheyarenotyetreconciled,andnotyetacceptedthroughHisgrace?Toallsuchpersons,then,mustwespeakasSt.Pauldid;andifanypresentarenotyetreconciled,notyetforgiven,notyetjustifiedbeforeGod,look,webeseechyou,atthecrossofChrist;lookatHissubstitutionofp.68Himselfforsinners;lookatthehopeoffullforgivenesssetbeforeyouthroughHisblood;andlisten,Iimploreyou,tothewordsspokenbyHisownauthority,— “AsthoughGoddidbeseechyoubyus:weprayyouinChrist’sstead,beyereconciledtoGod.”
