“腾讯分分彩在线六码单期计划”ButIdonotdenythatthetextisoneofconsiderabledifficulty.Thefirstgreatdifficultyistoascertaintowhomthewordswerespoken.FromLuke,xxiv.33,wefindthatthepersonspresentwere“theeleven,andthemthatwerewiththem;”andthereisnothingintherecordtodecidewhetherthewordswereaddressedtotheelevenApostlesseparately,ortothewholecompany—including,ofcourse,laymenandwomen.Myownbeliefis,thattheywereaddressedtotheelevenseparately,andconveyedaspecialjudicialpowertotheseinspiredmen.Thattheypossessedsuchapowerp.59isclearfromhistory;forwhenPeterretainedthesinofAnaniasandSapphira,Godratifiedhisdecisionbytheirdeath;andwhenSt.PaulpassedsentenceontheincestuouspersonatCorinth,heclearlyclaimedasupernaturalpowerofjudgmentwhenhesaid(1Cor.v.3-5),“ForIverily,asabsentinbodybutpresentinspirit,havejudgedalready,asthoughIwerepresent,concerninghimthathathsodonethisdeed.InthenameofourLordJesusChrist,whenyearegatheredtogether,andmyspirit,withthepowerofourLordJesusChrist,todeliversuchanoneuntoSatanforthedestructionoftheflesh,thatthespiritmaybesavedinthedayoftheLordJesus.”Sowhenheremittedthesamesentenceheclearlyclaimedspecialrighttodoso;ashesaid,“IfIforgaveanything,towhomIforgaveit,foryoursakesforgaveIit,inthepersonofChrist.”Butifthiswerethecase,andifthepowerwasgiventotheApostlesasapartoftheirapostolicoffice,itfollowsthatwiththeApostlesitmusthaveceasedforever.Accordingly,inourLord’swordsthereisnotthesmallesthintattransmission;andasfortheideathattheApostlescouldtransmitittotheBishops,andtheBishopstothePresbyters,itisaltogetherwithoutfoundationp.60inthewordofGod.Infact,thecaseoftheCorinthiansprovesclearlythatitwasnotsotransmitted.Therecannotbeadoubt,thatwhentheepistlewaswrittentherewerePresbytersintheChurchofCorinth;anditisclearthatTitushadjustbeenthereonaspecialmission,forheitwaswhobroughttoSt.PaulthetidingsoftherepentanceoftheCorinthians(2Cor.vii.6,7,andxii.17,18).Butyetnoneofthesepersonsappeartohavehadatransmittedpower.ItwasnecessarytoreferthecasetoSt.Paulhimself.Heretainedandheremitted;andhedidboth“inthepersonofChrist.”

p.23Thepointofcontrast,therefore,isthis,thatintheceremoniallawtherewasamultitudeofsacrificesdaybyday,andyearbyyear,repeated;whereasinthenewcovenanttherewasbutone,andthatoneeffectualforever.Intheonetherewasmultiplicity,intheotheroneness;intheoneunceasingrepetition,intheotheronefinalact,whichsetthewholeatrestforever.Thecontraststandsoutsoplainlythathemayrunthatreadethit.Nay,more,itiswrittenwiththatperfectclearness,andoften-repeatedstatement,thatIconfessmyselfperfectlyunabletocomprehendhowanyperson,readingthesetwochapters,witharealdesiretodiscoverthemindoftheSpirit,canarriveattheconclusionthattherecanbeanyrepetitionofthesacrificeoftheLordJesusChristunderanyformwhatever,oranysupplementaryworkofanykindwhatevertocompleteorfillupHisoneperfectsacrificeforsin.

p.11Thewafer,therefore,orthepieceofbread,isheresaidtobeafterconsecrationnothinglessthanareal,livingSaviour,withbody,soul,anddivinity,tobeworshippedwiththatholy,reverentialworshipwhichbelongsexclusivelytotheGodofheavenandearth,forthatisthemeaningofthewordLatreia.Thereissomethingveryawfulinsuchastatement.ItshowsthattherecanbenopeacewithRome—nocompromise,nomiddlepath.Iftheyareright,weareawfullywrong.Ifweareright,theyareguiltyofidolatry.IfallthesepiecesofbreadarelivingSaviours,wehavebeenterriblyguiltyinneverworshippinganyoneofthem;butif,ontheotherhand,theyhaveremainedbreadstill—plain,simple,unchangedbread—thenwehaveidolatryofthemostunquestionablecharacterwhenthatbreadisexaltedbythepriestforadoration,andmenfalldownandworshipitasthelivingGod.

Thesenseofreverencemaytakeawrongaswellasarightdirection.ItledJohnhimselftoworshipanangel,andtobringonhimselftheseverereproofwhichhehassofaithfullyrecorded,anditmayleadmisguidedmentogivethatwhichisnotGodtheworshipduetoGodalone.Butwhilewethinkthis,letnonefallshortinthedeepestreverence.NonecanadoreHimenough;nonecanbeholyenoughinHispresenceandatHisfeet.Butitp.17isthelivingSaviourattherighthandofGodwhomwewilladore.ItisthePrinceonthethrone,thePriestattherighthandoftheFather.Itistheliving,reigning,triumphantSaviour,“faraboveallprincipalitiesandpowers,andmightanddominion,andeverynamethatisnamed,notonlyinthisworld,butalsointhatwhichistocome;”andnotasmallpieceoflifelessbread,whichissaidtohavebeenturnedintoGodbythemiraculouspowersofapriest.

4.Naymore,itiscontrarytothewordsofourLord.Thewords,asgivenbySt.Matthew(xxvi.26-28)were:“Andastheywereeating,Jesustookbread,andblessedit,andbrakeit,andgaveittothedisciples,andsaid,Take,eat;thisismybody.Andhetookthecup,andgavethanks,andgaveittothem,saying,Drinkyeallofit;forthisismybloodofthenewtestament,whichisshedformanyfortheremissionofsins.”Ofthebread,therefore,p.14Hesaid,“Thisismybody;”andofthewine,“Thisismyblood.”Thebreaddidnotrepresentthebodyandbloodtogether,butthebodyonly,andthewinetheblood;or,ifthedoctrineoftransubstantiationweretaught,thepassagewouldteachthatthebreadwaschangedintothebody,andthewineintotheblood.ButtheteachingofRomedefiesallsuchdistinctions,thoughthusplainlylaiddownbynolessanauthoritythanourLordHimself,andfearlesslyhurlsheranathemasagainstallwhodonotbelievethatthebread,andthebreadalone,ischangedintobody,blood,soul,anddivinity,andbecomes,tousetheirownexpression,“awholeChrist,”tobeexalted,carriedinprocessions,andadoredasalivingGod.Thewordsthemselves,takenliterally,aredeadagainstsuchadoctrine.Iamnotsurprised,therefore,whenIreadour28thArticle,whichsays:“Transubstantiation(orthechangeofthesubstanceofbreadandwine)intheSupperoftheLord,cannotbeprovedbyHolyWrit,butisrepugnanttotheplainwordsofScripture.”ButIamsurprisedthatChristianpeopleintheChurchofEnglandshouldsitsolightassomeseemtodotoaheresyofsofearfulacharacter,andthatmenp.15shouldbesoindifferenttotruthaseventospeakofthepossibilityofpeacewithRome.

ThereconciliationofGodtothesinnerhasbeenwroughtoutforusbytheLordJesusChrist.ItisthegreatworkofGodincarnate,andHewroughtitalone,inHisgreatsacrificeofpropitiation.Ofthispartofthework,therefore,theApostlesays,— “Towit,thatGodwasinChrist,reconcilingtheworlduntoHimself.”2Cor.v.18,19.

2.Butthesacrificegoesfarther,andinvolvesthededicationofourpowerstotheLord’smostsacredservice.Thetextimpliesthiswhenitsays,“Presentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holyandacceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”Thereisclearly,therefore,tobeservice,—aserviceinvolvingtheactiveuseofhumanpowers.Insomecasesthebodyhasbeenactuallysurrenderedtobleed,orburn,inmartyrdom.ManyanoblemanofGodhasgivenhisbodytobeburntratherthanacknowledgethedoctrineoftheMass.Tothis,however,wearenotcalled.Butstilltheremaybesacrificewithoutmartyrdom,dedicationwithoutdeath,andsuchasurrenderofthelivingpowersasmaycorrespondtothedescription,“Thattheywhichliveshouldnothenceforthliveuntothemselves,butuntoHimthatdiedp.38forthem,androseagain.”Thisisthesecretofthemissionaryspirit;thisitiswhichhasledsomeofthenoblestyoungmeninourUniversitiestoabandonallhomeprospects,andtodevotetheirwholelivestothegreatworkofproclaimingChristindistantlands.This,again,isthespiritthatatthispresenttimeisstirringthousandsofourownpeopleathome,devotedmenanddevotedwomen,tospendtheirliveslabouringforGod,helpingthepoor,comfortingtheafflicted,nursingthesick,andstrivingineverypossiblewaytomakeknownthesweetnessofthesacredNamewhichhasbroughtlifeandpeacetotheirownsouls.

Inthispresentworldweareinamixedcondition,andhowevertrulywemaybewalkingwithGod,thereistheoldmanandtheoldnatureleft.ItisjustthesamewithusasitwasofoldwithCanaan.Israelhadtakenpossession,buttheCanaaniteswerestillintheland.So,evenwhentheLordJesushastakenpossessionoftheheart,therearesinsstillabidingthere—tempers,lusts,covetousness,selfishness,pride,andathousandothers—someprevailinginonecharacterandsomeinanother.NowofallthesetheChristianmanmustbepreparedtomakeasacrifice—histemper,hispride,hisambition,hiscovetousness,hisself-love;hemustbepreparedtobringalltothealtar,withoutmercyandwithoutreserve.Thus,inCol.iii.5,St.PauladdressesthosewhoarerisenwithChrist,andsays,“Mortifytherefore,”orputtodeath,orsacrifice,“yourmemberswhichareoftheflesh:fornication,uncleanness,inordinateaffection,evilconcupiscence,andcovetousness,whichisidolatry.”Thereisnooccasiontobeshutupwithinthewallsofanunneryforthis;norwillthewallsofanunneryp.37intheleasthelpustoit,fortheyarejustaseffectualinshuttingsininasinshuttingitout.Hereisworkforhomelife,andforallclassesinhomelife—forhusbandsandwives,parentsandchildren,mastersandservants:weallhaveourgreattemptations,soweallhavetothrowourselvesheartandsoulintothegreatstruggle,andwithanunsparinghanddealresolutelywithbesettingsin.
