“sg极速飞艇计划【注册大礼】”4.Naymore,itiscontrarytothewordsofourLord.Thewords,asgivenbySt.Matthew(xxvi.26-28)were:“Andastheywereeating,Jesustookbread,andblessedit,andbrakeit,andgaveittothedisciples,andsaid,Take,eat;thisismybody.Andhetookthecup,andgavethanks,andgaveittothem,saying,Drinkyeallofit;forthisismybloodofthenewtestament,whichisshedformanyfortheremissionofsins.”Ofthebread,therefore,p.14Hesaid,“Thisismybody;”andofthewine,“Thisismyblood.”Thebreaddidnotrepresentthebodyandbloodtogether,butthebodyonly,andthewinetheblood;or,ifthedoctrineoftransubstantiationweretaught,thepassagewouldteachthatthebreadwaschangedintothebody,andthewineintotheblood.ButtheteachingofRomedefiesallsuchdistinctions,thoughthusplainlylaiddownbynolessanauthoritythanourLordHimself,andfearlesslyhurlsheranathemasagainstallwhodonotbelievethatthebread,andthebreadalone,ischangedintobody,blood,soul,anddivinity,andbecomes,tousetheirownexpression,“awholeChrist,”tobeexalted,carriedinprocessions,andadoredasalivingGod.Thewordsthemselves,takenliterally,aredeadagainstsuchadoctrine.Iamnotsurprised,therefore,whenIreadour28thArticle,whichsays:“Transubstantiation(orthechangeofthesubstanceofbreadandwine)intheSupperoftheLord,cannotbeprovedbyHolyWrit,butisrepugnanttotheplainwordsofScripture.”ButIamsurprisedthatChristianpeopleintheChurchofEnglandshouldsitsolightassomeseemtodotoaheresyofsofearfulacharacter,andthatmenp.15shouldbesoindifferenttotruthaseventospeakofthepossibilityofpeacewithRome.

Thesenseofreverencemaytakeawrongaswellasarightdirection.ItledJohnhimselftoworshipanangel,andtobringonhimselftheseverereproofwhichhehassofaithfullyrecorded,anditmayleadmisguidedmentogivethatwhichisnotGodtheworshipduetoGodalone.Butwhilewethinkthis,letnonefallshortinthedeepestreverence.NonecanadoreHimenough;nonecanbeholyenoughinHispresenceandatHisfeet.Butitp.17isthelivingSaviourattherighthandofGodwhomwewilladore.ItisthePrinceonthethrone,thePriestattherighthandoftheFather.Itistheliving,reigning,triumphantSaviour,“faraboveallprincipalitiesandpowers,andmightanddominion,andeverynamethatisnamed,notonlyinthisworld,butalsointhatwhichistocome;”andnotasmallpieceoflifelessbread,whichissaidtohavebeenturnedintoGodbythemiraculouspowersofapriest.

p.6ThewordsteachusthatatthepresenttimeourBlessedLordandSaviourisattherighthandofGod,andtheysuggesttwosubjects,Hisplace,andHisemployment.

“Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”

p.11Thewafer,therefore,orthepieceofbread,isheresaidtobeafterconsecrationnothinglessthanareal,livingSaviour,withbody,soul,anddivinity,tobeworshippedwiththatholy,reverentialworshipwhichbelongsexclusivelytotheGodofheavenandearth,forthatisthemeaningofthewordLatreia.Thereissomethingveryawfulinsuchastatement.ItshowsthattherecanbenopeacewithRome—nocompromise,nomiddlepath.Iftheyareright,weareawfullywrong.Ifweareright,theyareguiltyofidolatry.IfallthesepiecesofbreadarelivingSaviours,wehavebeenterriblyguiltyinneverworshippinganyoneofthem;butif,ontheotherhand,theyhaveremainedbreadstill—plain,simple,unchangedbread—thenwehaveidolatryofthemostunquestionablecharacterwhenthatbreadisexaltedbythepriestforadoration,andmenfalldownandworshipitasthelivingGod.

Inthispresentworldweareinamixedcondition,andhowevertrulywemaybewalkingwithGod,thereistheoldmanandtheoldnatureleft.ItisjustthesamewithusasitwasofoldwithCanaan.Israelhadtakenpossession,buttheCanaaniteswerestillintheland.So,evenwhentheLordJesushastakenpossessionoftheheart,therearesinsstillabidingthere—tempers,lusts,covetousness,selfishness,pride,andathousandothers—someprevailinginonecharacterandsomeinanother.NowofallthesetheChristianmanmustbepreparedtomakeasacrifice—histemper,hispride,hisambition,hiscovetousness,hisself-love;hemustbepreparedtobringalltothealtar,withoutmercyandwithoutreserve.Thus,inCol.iii.5,St.PauladdressesthosewhoarerisenwithChrist,andsays,“Mortifytherefore,”orputtodeath,orsacrifice,“yourmemberswhichareoftheflesh:fornication,uncleanness,inordinateaffection,evilconcupiscence,andcovetousness,whichisidolatry.”Thereisnooccasiontobeshutupwithinthewallsofanunneryforthis;norwillthewallsofanunneryp.37intheleasthelpustoit,fortheyarejustaseffectualinshuttingsininasinshuttingitout.Hereisworkforhomelife,andforallclassesinhomelife—forhusbandsandwives,parentsandchildren,mastersandservants:weallhaveourgreattemptations,soweallhavetothrowourselvesheartandsoulintothegreatstruggle,andwithanunsparinghanddealresolutelywithbesettingsin.

IhavequotedthepassagefromRomeinwhichitsaysthereis“body,soul,anddivinity.”Butwhatdoesanyoneofthosepassagessayaboutsoulanddivinity?IfHehadmeanttoteachusthatthebreadwaschangedintoHisbrokenbody,whatonewordisthereaboutthesoul,ortheGodhead?AllthatisaddedbyRome,andthewholefabricofsuperstitionbaseduponitiswithoutashadowoffoundationinthewordofGod.Itisavastsuperstructure,but,asfarastheteachingofHolyScriptureisconcerned,utterlybaseless.Thetextstandsveryneartheconclusionofamostimportantargument,inwhichtheApostlehasbeendrawingthecontrastbetweentheJewishsacrificesundertheceremoniallawandtheoneperfectsacrificewroughtoutforusbyp.19theSonofGodonthecross.Thecontrastcommenceswiththe25thverseofthe9thchapter,andextendstothe14thverseofthe10th;afterwhichweareledtothepracticalapplicationofthewholeepistle.Letus,then,first,carefullystudythepointofcontrast,andthenthereasonofit.

II.Such,then,isthecontrast;andnowletusturn,inthesecondplace,tothereasonofit.Whywerethoseancientsacrificessooftenrepeated?andwhywasoursonceandforever?Thesamepassagethatbringsoutthecontrastexplainsthereasonofit;andthereasonisthat,p.24inthemselves,theyhavenosavingpower,andthatourshas.Theywereineffectualfortheblottingoutofsin,buttheoneofferingofourBlessedLordwasperfectlyeffectualintheverypointwheretheyfailed.Therewasasgreatacontrastinrespectofefficiencyastherewasinrespectoffrequency;and,infact,therepetitionwastheresultofweakness,astheonenesswastheresultofcompletesufficiency.Thisinsufficiencyisplacedintwopointsofviewinthechapter,forwearetheretaught,first,thatthesesacrificescouldnottakeawaysin,and,secondly,thattheycouldnotsatisfytheconscience.

Ineveryworkcarriedonbymanweareperfectlycertaintomeetwithhumaninfirmity,andhumanerror;andtheworkoftheministryformsnoexceptiontotherule.Itiscarriedonbycommonmen,withcommonfleshandblood,exposedtothecommontemptationsofcommonlife,sothatwearesuretofindinitthecommonfailuresofourcommonhumanity.Yet,withallthis,itfillsamostimportantplaceinthelifeofallofus.Itnotonlyimpartsadistinctivecharactertoourpublicworship,butitreachesourhomelife;sothatthereisnotafamilyinaparishthatisnot,insomewayorother,moreorlessaffectedbytheministryinp.47theChurch.Theinfluencemaynotalwaysbeforgood,butitalwaysexists.Insomecasesitmaybesimplynegative,andactuallydoharmbynotdoinggood.Insomecasesitmaybepositivelymischievous,aswhenitismadethemeansforthedisseminationofdeadlyerror.WhileinmanyitismadeGod’smeansforconferringincalculableblessings;sothatthroughittheyoungareinstructed,thecarelessawakened,inquirersdirectedtotheLordJesusChrist,andthechildrenofGodconfirmedinfaithandarousedtoholyenergyfortheirLord.Thepositionofaclergymanissuchthattheinfluenceofhisministryissuretobefeltthroughouthisparish.Hehasthesacredprivilegeofleadingtheworshipofthereligiousportionofhispeople.Theyareallbroughtintocontactwithhisoffice,andallare,somewayorother,affectedbythemannerinwhichthatofficeisfulfilled.

    II.Thisthenbeing,Itrust,clear,ournextsubjectwillbetheobjectoftheministry;andthisistaughtveryclearlyinthewords,— “Thep.52ministryofreconciliation.”ThereconciliationofthesinnertoGodisthegreatresult,toattainwhichGodfoundedtheministry.Thequestionhasbeenraisedwhether,bythereconciliationherementioned,ismeantthereconciliationofGodtothesinner,orthereconciliationofthesinnertoGod.Surelybothareincluded.Inourguiltyandruinedconditionthereisadoubleenmity.Man,throughhiscorruption,isatenmitywithGod;andGod,throughHisrighteousness,isatenmitywithrebelliousman.Andasthereisadoubleenmitythroughsin,so,likewise,isthereadoublereconciliationthroughChrist.God,Hislawbeingsatisfied,isreconciledtothesinner;andthesinner,hisheartbeingchanged,isreconcileduntoGod.

     WestudiedlastSundaytheoneperfectandfinalsacrificemadeforthesinsofthewholeworld,whenourLordJesusChristcompletedourpropitiationonthecross.Wefoundthatthatsacrificedifferedfromthoseoftheceremoniallaw,inthegreatfactthatitwasonceandforever;thatitwassoperfect,socomplete,sofullysufficienttosatisfythewholeclaimofthelaw,thatwhenitwasonceofferedtherewasnoplaceleftforrepetition,perpetuation,oraddition.Theveilofthetemplewasthenrentfromthetoptothebottom,andtherewasnospaceleftforanyfurtherrending.TheLordhimselfsaid,“Itisfinished;”sothewholewasdone,anddoneforever.

     Again:itisnottheofficeoftheministertoforgivesins.IfourLord,inHiswordsofJohnxx.23,hadreallyconnectedsuchapowerwiththeministryofreconciliation,itismostextraordinarythatinallthemanyportionsoftheNewTestamentwhichrelatetotheministrythereisnoallusiontoit.TherearethreewholeEpistlesdirectedexclusivelytothechiefpastorsoftheChurch,besidesseveraladdressestopresbytersbothintheActsandEpistles;andisitnotamostremarkablefact,thatthereisnotasingleallusioninanyoneofthesepassagesorepistlestotheforgivenessofsins,asformingaportionoftheministryofreconciliation?Therearefulldirectionsrespectingpreaching,praying,reproving,instructing,andbehaviourtoallthedifferentclassesoftheflock,butofforgivenessofsinbytheminister,notonewordcanyoufindanywhere;andyetforgivenessitselfisthegreatsubjectofthep.58wholeNewTestament.Butitisalwaystracedatonce,withoutanyintermediatemediation,totheLordHimself.ItisalwaysascribedtoHisblood,Hisredemption,andHisgrace,andisneveronceconnectedinanywaywithanypowerofforgivenessbestowedbyapriest.Iamnotnowdwellingonanyoneparticularpassage,butratherontheomissionofthewholesubjectfromthewordofGod;andIcannotbutthinkthatthatomissionisaproof,beyondcontradiction,thattheApostles,writingbyinspiration,didnotunderstandourLordasteachinginthesewordsthattheforgivenessofsinbyapriestformedanypartoftheministryofreconciliation.

    HowgloriouslydifferentistheonesacrificeoftheSonofGod!It,anditalone,wassufficientforallthesinsofthewholeworld.ThesubstitutionoftheSonofGodforthesinnersatisfiedthewholelaw,andclearedawaythewholecurse.ItnotonlyinGod’scounselsremovedtheguilt,butitreachestheverydepthsofthehumanheart,andgivespeacetotheconsciencewoundedforsin.Observethewordsinix.13,14,ascontrastedwiththoseinx.2.Inx.2wearetaught,thatifthosesacrificescouldhavepurgedtheconscience,theywouldhaveceased.Butinix.14weread,thatthroughthesacrificeofourblessedLord,thisverythingisdone;fortheApostlesays:— “HowmuchmoreshallthebloodofChrist,whothroughtheEternalSpiritofferedHimselfwithoutspottoGod,purgeyourconsciencefromdeadworkstoservethelivingGod?”Theonesacrificewaseffectivetopurgetheconscience;whileallthewholemultitudeofoften-repeatedofferingslefttheconsciencejustp.27whereitwas;withoutrest,withoutpeace,withoutanyrealsatisfaction,underthepainfulpressureofadeeply-feltsin.Letusneverforgetthisgreatresult;foritshowsthatwehavethatwhichtheJew,inhissacrificestakenalone,couldneverhave—aconscienceatrest,aconsciencesetfree,becauseallsinisblottedoutforever;aconsciencereleasedfromitsburden,becausetheLordJesusChrist,theSonofGod,wasadivinely-appointedsubstituteforguilt.

     Weliveinveryanxioustimes.Differentphasesoferrorarefollowingeachotherwithgreatrapidity,likewavesbeforethegaleonastormysea.Averyshorttimeagoweweredeeplydistressedbythescepticaltendenciesofcertainablewriters,—tendenciesstillinrapidprogress,thoughpublicattentionhasbeenrecentlydirectedintoanotherchannel.NowwearestartledbytheopendeclarationofRomishdoctrine,andopenpracticeofRomishceremonial,bymenwhohaveacceptedofficeinachurchwhichdeclarestheseverydoctrinestobe“blasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.”Ithasbecome,therefore,absolutelynecessarythatwep.4shouldunderstandthereasonswhytheChurchofEnglandhasseparatedfromthatofRome,andwhyitisthatweraiseourvoiceagainsttheseinnovations.Iamwellawarethatsuchasubjectisdistastefultomanyminds.Someshrinkfromthetroubleofcontroversy,andwouldratherhavetheirwholeattentionfixedonthatwhichtheyfindhelpfultotheirownsouls.Othersthinkituncharitable;andmaintainthat,providedapersonbeconscientiousinhispractice,weneedfeelnoanxietyaboutthetruthorerrorofhiscreed.ButIampersuadedthatitwillnotdosotodealwithtruth.Thesearedaysinwhichwemustknowwhatwebelieve,andwhywebelieveit.Ifwedesiretostandfast,wemustknowourstanding-ground.AndifwedesiretoseeouryoungpeoplegrowingupaswitnessesfortheLordJesusChrist,wemustnotmerelystrivetocallforthinthemareligionoffeeling,butmusttraintheminsoundScripturalprinciples,thattheymaybeabletogiveananswertoeveryonewhoaskeththemareasonofthehopethatisinthem.TheRomishquestionisforceduponusbytheenormouseffortswhichtheChurchofRomeismakingfortherecoveryofitsancientsupremacyinEngland;andImustsay,andsayitwiththep.5deepestgriefandhumiliation,Ifearwehavebeenbetrayed,inmanycases,bymenwho,asclergymenoftheChurchofEngland,havepledgedthemselvestotheveryprinciplestheyarebetraying.Itishightime,therefore,thatweshouldunderstandthegroundofoursolemnprotestagainstRome,andthatweshouldnotmerelystudytruthinitssimplicity,butstudyitlikewiseinitsoppositiontoRomisherror.Ipurpose,however,Godhelpingme,todirectyourthoughtsthismorningtoonepointofthecontroversy.Icannotattemptthemanypointsonwhichweareatissue.Iconfinemyself,therefore,toone;andthatis,theteachingofthewordofGodwithreferencetoourexaltedSaviour,inoppositiontotheteachingofRomeinthedoctrineoftransubstantiation.MaytheLorddirectourstudies,andwriteHisowntruthmostdeeplyonourhearts!

     Onethingisperfectlyclear,thatthesesacrificesarenotasupplementtotheonegreatsacrificeforsin.TheyarenotintendedtosupplyanydeficiencyinthegreatworkofourBlessedLord.Thereisnodeficiencythere;andiftherewere,nothingthatwecoulddowouldsupplyit.Thereisnodeficiency,forbythe“oneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Andifthereweredeficiency,howcouldmansupplyit?Istherenotsomethingdreadfulinthethoughtofapatchworkatonement,partlybytheSonofGodandpartlybyman;partlyperfect,andpartlyimperfect;partlypureinalltheinfinitepurityofGod,andpartlydefiledwithallthedefilementsofafallenandsinfulmanhood?No!thepropitiationisperfect,unmixed,andundefiledforever.ItisthesacrificeoftheSonofGod,anditstandsaloneforalleternity.
