“正 规 分 分 彩 计 划app”This,then,beingthecase,weseeatoncewhythereisnotmoreself-sacrificeforGod.Thereasonclearlyis,thatthereisawantofthedeepsenseofmercy.ThesacrificeofChristisnotsufficientlyrealised,andtheresultisthattheself-sacrificeiswithheld.Ifearthereisagreatwantofself-sacrificeevenamongthosewhoholdthetruth.Surelytherearemanywhosereligionnevercoststhemanyrealpersonalself-denial.Theypassthroughlifeeasilyandrespectably,butrefermattersmoretotheirp.44owninclinationthantothecallofGod.Theyaremorereadytopayotherstoworkthantoworkthemselves,andarepronetostandalooffromdistastefulservice,if,astheysay,itdoesnotsuitthem;or,astheymightsay,theydonotlikeit.So,again,butfewdenythemselvesingiving,andthoughmanyareliberal,therearefewwhosepersonalcomfortsarereallydiminishedbytheirliberality.Now,whyisthis?andhowisitthatthegreatsalvationhasnotmorepoweroverus?Isitnotthatthesalvationitselfisnotenoughfeltandappreciated?Itistrueofus,asitwasoftheCorinthians,that“weknowthegraceofourLordJesusChrist,who,thoughHewasrich,yetforoursakesbecamepoor,thatwethroughHispovertymightberich.”Butthoughweknowit,wedonotdeeplyfeelit.Itislikepaintlyingonthesurface,butitisnotburntintous,soastobecomepartandparcelofourselves.Everythingmaybecorrect;ourdoctrinescriptural,andourprinciplessound:butneitheronenortheotherhasgonehometotheinmostsoulwithsuchpowerthatwehavelearnedto“countallthingsbutlossfortheexcellencyoftheknowledgeofChristJesusourLord.”Whatisit,then,thatwewant?Whatp.45mustlieattherootofall?Amorepowerfulsenseofmercy,adeeperconvictionofneed,aclearerperceptionofwhatChristhasdoneforus,amorethoroughappreciationofHisperfectsacrifice;andwhenthatisgiven,weshallbebetterabletounderstandtheappeal,— “Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”

SELF-SACRIFICE.Thesenseofreverencemaytakeawrongaswellasarightdirection.ItledJohnhimselftoworshipanangel,andtobringonhimselftheseverereproofwhichhehassofaithfullyrecorded,anditmayleadmisguidedmentogivethatwhichisnotGodtheworshipduetoGodalone.Butwhilewethinkthis,letnonefallshortinthedeepestreverence.NonecanadoreHimenough;nonecanbeholyenoughinHispresenceandatHisfeet.Butitp.17isthelivingSaviourattherighthandofGodwhomwewilladore.ItisthePrinceonthethrone,thePriestattherighthandoftheFather.Itistheliving,reigning,triumphantSaviour,“faraboveallprincipalitiesandpowers,andmightanddominion,andeverynamethatisnamed,notonlyinthisworld,butalsointhatwhichistocome;”andnotasmallpieceoflifelessbread,whichissaidtohavebeenturnedintoGodbythemiraculouspowersofapriest.

Here,then,isourdelightfulassurance.Welookbacktotheworkofthecross,andthereseethewholeburdenofalloursinbornebyHim,andsoputawayforever.Weasknofurthersacrifice,forweknowthatHemadethereuponthecross“afull,perfect,andsufficientsacrifice,oblation,andsatisfaction,forthesinsofthewholeworld;”andwenowlooktoourBlessedSaviourasreigningandsaving.BecauseHereignsweknowthatallisrightlyordered,andbecauseHesaveswebelievethatweourselvesshallbesafeforeternity.Weseemanythingsintheworldthatarealtogetheropposedtowhatwethinkbest;butweknowthatGodhasputallthingsunderHisfeet,andgivenHimtobetheHeadoverallthingstoHisChurch;and,therefore,thatallisinHishand,andallwillworktogetherforgood.Wefinddeepsininourselves,andweknowhowhardathingitisreallytowalkwithGod.Wefinddefectinourprayers,defectinourfaith,defectinourservice,defectinourbestefforts,p.9defecteverywhere;butwelookuptoyonderthrone,andtherewefindalovingSaviour;onewhoknowsourdeepneed,—onewhohasdiedforus,—onewholovesus,—onewhocanfeelwithus,andwhovouchsafestoactasourPriestandAdvocate,sothatinthemidstofallourshortcomingsanddeficiencieswemay,inHisName,andthroughHismostpreciousblood,“comeboldlytotheThroneofGrace,thatwemayobtainmercy,andfindgracetohelpintimeofneed.”

What,then,istherelationshipbetweenoursacrificeandHis?andhowaretheyconnected?Therecanbenodoubtonthissubjectifweturntothetext,whereweread,“Ibeseechyoutherefore,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice.”Itis,therefore,thedeepsenseofunmeritedmercythatistop.43calloutthewillingsacrificefromasavedandthankfulpeople.ThisisjusthowitstandsinourCommunionService.Wefirstcomewiththeconfessionofsin;wethenpartakeofthesacredfeast;andseek,byGod’sgrace,torealiseinlivingfaiththebodybrokenandthebloodshedforoursins;afterwhich,butnotbefore,we“offerandpresenttoHimourselves,oursoulsandourbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivelysacrificeuntoHim.”Oursacrifice,therefore,istheresultofourdeepsenseofunmeritedmercyshowninHisperfectsacrificeonthecross.Itisasacrificeofpraiseandthanksgiving.Itisthewillingofferingofthosewhohavefoundmercy,andaremostdeeplyandhumblythankfulforit.

4.Naymore,itiscontrarytothewordsofourLord.Thewords,asgivenbySt.Matthew(xxvi.26-28)were:“Andastheywereeating,Jesustookbread,andblessedit,andbrakeit,andgaveittothedisciples,andsaid,Take,eat;thisismybody.Andhetookthecup,andgavethanks,andgaveittothem,saying,Drinkyeallofit;forthisismybloodofthenewtestament,whichisshedformanyfortheremissionofsins.”Ofthebread,therefore,p.14Hesaid,“Thisismybody;”andofthewine,“Thisismyblood.”Thebreaddidnotrepresentthebodyandbloodtogether,butthebodyonly,andthewinetheblood;or,ifthedoctrineoftransubstantiationweretaught,thepassagewouldteachthatthebreadwaschangedintothebody,andthewineintotheblood.ButtheteachingofRomedefiesallsuchdistinctions,thoughthusplainlylaiddownbynolessanauthoritythanourLordHimself,andfearlesslyhurlsheranathemasagainstallwhodonotbelievethatthebread,andthebreadalone,ischangedintobody,blood,soul,anddivinity,andbecomes,tousetheirownexpression,“awholeChrist,”tobeexalted,carriedinprocessions,andadoredasalivingGod.Thewordsthemselves,takenliterally,aredeadagainstsuchadoctrine.Iamnotsurprised,therefore,whenIreadour28thArticle,whichsays:“Transubstantiation(orthechangeofthesubstanceofbreadandwine)intheSupperoftheLord,cannotbeprovedbyHolyWrit,butisrepugnanttotheplainwordsofScripture.”ButIamsurprisedthatChristianpeopleintheChurchofEnglandshouldsitsolightassomeseemtodotoaheresyofsofearfulacharacter,andthatmenp.15shouldbesoindifferenttotruthaseventospeakofthepossibilityofpeacewithRome.

3.Oncemore:thesacrificeinvolvesthefreegiftofmoney.Moneywithmostmenliesveryneartheheart.Opentheheart,andyouopenthepurse.Lettheheartbecomedull,lifeless,cold,andunfeeling,andthepursesooncloses.ThusthesacrificeofSelfisalmostsuretoleadtotheofferingofmoney.Coldheartsgivelittle;butwhentheheartisfulltheofferingsflowfreely.ThemenofMacedoniawerepoorpeople,butnosoonerhadtheygiventheirownselvestotheLordthan“theabundanceoftheirjoy,andtheirdeeppoverty,aboundeduntotherichesoftheirliberality.”Nowtheseofferingsp.39aredescribedintheScripturesasasacrificetoGod.St.Paulalludestothem,inPhilip,iv.18.Itisnotperfectlyclearwhetherhealludestoacontributiontowardshisownmaintenance,ortothecollectioninwhichhetooksodeepaninterestforthepoorsaintsinJerusalem;but,eitherway,hedescribestheofferingsasanodourofasweetsmell,a“sacrificeacceptable,wellpleasingtoGod.”ThisgivesadelightfulviewofcontributionsinarightspiritfortheserviceoftheLord.ItshowsthatthefreeandgenerousgivertherebyoffersasacrificewellpleasingtoGod.Itrebukesatthesametimetheniggardlyandparsimoniousspirit,thespiritthatgivesreluctantly,andcomplainsofmanycalls.YetIverilybelievethattogivefreelycanscarcelybecalledasacrifice,fornomoneygivessomuchpleasureasthatfreelyofferedtotheLord’sservice;andnopeopleenjoypropertysomuchastheydowhoarefreeandopen-heartedgivers.Ihavenottheslightesthesitation,therefore,inappealingtoyouforfreeandgenerousofferings,forIcansayasSt.Paulsaid(Philip,iv.17),“Idesirefruitthatmayaboundtoyouraccount;”andIamthoroughlypersuaded,thatnopersonwhoisinducedtogivefreelywilleverrepentofp.40“asacrificeacceptableandwellpleasingtoGod.”

1.Theremustbethesacrificeofoursins.

Thetextstandsveryneartheconclusionofamostimportantargument,inwhichtheApostlehasbeendrawingthecontrastbetweentheJewishsacrificesundertheceremoniallawandtheoneperfectsacrificewroughtoutforusbyp.19theSonofGodonthecross.Thecontrastcommenceswiththe25thverseofthe9thchapter,andextendstothe14thverseofthe10th;afterwhichweareledtothepracticalapplicationofthewholeepistle.Letus,then,first,carefullystudythepointofcontrast,andthenthereasonofit.

Now,suchadoctrineseemstomesoutterlycontrarytoallthatwearetaughtintheScripturesrespectingtheperfectionandconsequentonenessoftheoneofferingofourBlessedLordupontheCross,thatIamutterlyunabletocomprehendhowanypersonwhotakestheScripturesastheirauthoritycan,byanyprocessofmind,bebroughttobelieveit.AsIhavealreadysaid,thesechaptersseemtohavebeenwrittenwithapropheticreferencetoit;andIdonothesitatetoexpressmyfirmandfixedconviction,thatifwemeantoabidebyGod’swordasourguide,wemustprotestagainstthewholemovement.Normustweallowourselvestobeledawaybythereligiousfeelingsofpiousandearnestmen;orpermittheholyreverencewithwhich,asbelievingcommunicants,p.30weregardtheholycommunionofthebodyandbloodofChrist,toinduceustothinklightlyofadeadlyerror,eventhoughmenmakeuseofitinorder,apparently,toexaltthepeculiarsanctityofthesacrament.WemuststandfirmtothegreatprincipleofScripture;theprincipleforwhichourmartyredReformersdidnothesitatetoshedtheirlife-blood,thatthebreadisbread,andthewinewine,afterconsecration,justastheywerebeforeit;thatneithertheonenortheotherischangedintotheLordJesusChrist;thattheLordJesusChristisnotsacrificedinthesacrament;andthattherenevercanbe,solongastheworldlasts,anyfurthersacrificeforsin.WhentheLordJesusChristdiedonthecross,tousethelanguageofourChurch,He“madethere(byHisoneoblationofHimselfonceoffered)afull,perfect,andsufficientsacrifice,oblation,andsatisfaction,forthesinsofthewholeworld:”and,unlesswearepreparedtodenythesufficiencyoftheonecompleteatonement,wemustsetourfacewithaholydeterminationagainstallideasofrepetition,orperpetuation,ofanypropitiatorysacrificeforsin.

ButIdonotdenythatthetextisoneofconsiderabledifficulty.Thefirstgreatdifficultyistoascertaintowhomthewordswerespoken.FromLuke,xxiv.33,wefindthatthepersonspresentwere“theeleven,andthemthatwerewiththem;”andthereisnothingintherecordtodecidewhetherthewordswereaddressedtotheelevenApostlesseparately,ortothewholecompany—including,ofcourse,laymenandwomen.Myownbeliefis,thattheywereaddressedtotheelevenseparately,andconveyedaspecialjudicialpowertotheseinspiredmen.Thattheypossessedsuchapowerp.59isclearfromhistory;forwhenPeterretainedthesinofAnaniasandSapphira,Godratifiedhisdecisionbytheirdeath;andwhenSt.PaulpassedsentenceontheincestuouspersonatCorinth,heclearlyclaimedasupernaturalpowerofjudgmentwhenhesaid(1Cor.v.3-5),“ForIverily,asabsentinbodybutpresentinspirit,havejudgedalready,asthoughIwerepresent,concerninghimthathathsodonethisdeed.InthenameofourLordJesusChrist,whenyearegatheredtogether,andmyspirit,withthepowerofourLordJesusChrist,todeliversuchanoneuntoSatanforthedestructionoftheflesh,thatthespiritmaybesavedinthedayoftheLordJesus.”Sowhenheremittedthesamesentenceheclearlyclaimedspecialrighttodoso;ashesaid,“IfIforgaveanything,towhomIforgaveit,foryoursakesforgaveIit,inthepersonofChrist.”Butifthiswerethecase,andifthepowerwasgiventotheApostlesasapartoftheirapostolicoffice,itfollowsthatwiththeApostlesitmusthaveceasedforever.Accordingly,inourLord’swordsthereisnotthesmallesthintattransmission;andasfortheideathattheApostlescouldtransmitittotheBishops,andtheBishopstothePresbyters,itisaltogetherwithoutfoundationp.60inthewordofGod.Infact,thecaseoftheCorinthiansprovesclearlythatitwasnotsotransmitted.Therecannotbeadoubt,thatwhentheepistlewaswrittentherewerePresbytersintheChurchofCorinth;anditisclearthatTitushadjustbeenthereonaspecialmission,forheitwaswhobroughttoSt.PaulthetidingsoftherepentanceoftheCorinthians(2Cor.vii.6,7,andxii.17,18).Butyetnoneofthesepersonsappeartohavehadatransmittedpower.ItwasnecessarytoreferthecasetoSt.Paulhimself.Heretainedandheremitted;andhedidboth“inthepersonofChrist.”

Itis,ofcourse,impossibletoattemptadiscussionofthewholesubject,sothatwemustconfineourthoughtstothelessonsfromthisonepassage,— “Hehathcommittedtoustheministryofreconciliation;”andtherewillbeinitquitesufficientimportantmatter,asthewordswillsuggestthreemostimportantpoints,—theauthorityoftheministry,theobjectoftheministry,andthemeansbywhichthatobjectisaccomplished.

     This,then,isthemightyworkofGodinChrist:andthispassageprovesitsnature;andshowsthatitconsists,notinthechangeofdispositionp.53inman,butinthenon-imputationofsinonthepartofGod,— “Towit,thatGodwasinChrist,reconcilingtheworlduntoHimself,notimputingtheirtrespassesuntothem.”Youobservethatthewordsteachthatthereweretrespassesandrealguilt:suchtrespassesthat,iftheywereimputed,orallowedtostandforthecondemnationofthesinner,therecouldbenoreconciliation,andthesinnermustdie.ButGodinChristdoesnotimputeourtrespassesuntous:and,therefore,thebarrierisremoved;andinHimthereiscompletereconciliation.Butwehavenotyetdonewiththesubject;forthequestionarises,HowisitconsistentwiththerighteousnessofGod,thatHeshouldthusnotimputetrespassestothosewhoarereallyguilty?WhathasbecomeofHisgovernment,ifrealguiltisnotreckonedtotherealsinner?Thequestionisansweredinv.21:forwearetheretaughtthatguiltisnotimputedtous,because,inthemarvellouscounselofGod,ithasbeenimputedtotheLordJesusChristinourstead:forlookathiswords,— “ForHehathmadeHimwhoknewnosintobesinforus,thatwemightbemadetherighteousnessofGodinHim.”Thereisnoexplanationofthispassage,exceptthatHewhoknewnosinwasp.54reckonedsinful,inorderthatwe,whoaredeeplysunkinsin,mightbereckonedrighteous.Sinisnotimputedtoman;becausetheLordJesusChristbecameoursubstitute;andithasbeenimputedtoHiminourstead.
