II.Wemayturn,then,tooursecondsubject,therelationshipofthissacrificetothegreatandperfectsacrificeofferedonceandforeveronthecross.

1.Thewordsthemselvesprovethattheyarefigurative.Turnto1Cor.xi.25,whereweread:“Thiscupisthenewtestamentinmyblood.”Isthereanyoneblindenoughtosupposethatthecupwaschangedintothenewtestament?Thewordsmustmeanthatthecupwasanemblemofthecovenant.WhenourLordsaid,“Iamthevine,” “Iamthedoor,” “Iamthebreadoflife,”HedidnotmeanthatHewaschangedintoavine,intoadoor,orintobread,butthatallthesethingswereemblemsofHiswork.SoHesaysofthecup,thatitisanemblemofthecovenant;andifwewouldbeconsistentinterpreters,wemustbelievealsoofthebreadthatitwasdeclaredtobeanemblemofthebody.

Nor,again,isthissacrificethemeanswherebythegreatsacrificeisappliedtothesoul.Thisp.41isamorecommonideathantheother,andoneprevailingamongmanywhoarethoroughlyopposedtoPopery.ItisinharmonywithhumannaturetosupposethatwemustmakeoursacrificeinordertogainashareoftheblessingsofHis.Thuspeoplewillsometimesgiveup,firstonething,andthenanother,hopingbythesesacrificestofindpeacethroughthebloodofatonementoftheLordJesusChrist.TheyhavenoideaofbeingsavedthroughanythingbutthegreatsacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist;buttheyconsiderthattheymustmaketheirsacrificeinordertosecuretheapplicationofhisworktothemselves.Thisistheprincipleofalmostallself-imposedmortifications.Peoplehopethroughthemtobepartakersofreconciliationthroughthegreatatonement.Yetnoneofthesethingssatisfythesoul.Ihavemyselfknownpersonswhohaveresolutelymadetheeffort,bututterlyfailed.Theyhavebecomeanxiousabouttheirsoul,andsettoworktoreachthecrossofChristbypersonalself-denial.Theyhavegivenuptheirdifferentpursuitsonebyone;butatlengththeyhavefoundthatnothinghasdonethemanygood.Theyhavebeenjustasfarfromthepeaceofreconciliationastheyp.42werethedaytheybegan.Noneofthesesacrificeshadhelpedthemintheleast.No,andnonecouldhelpthem.Nothingcouldhelpthembutafreejustificationthroughfaith,andfaithalone;andthat,thankGod!atlasttheyhavefoundsufficient.Andsowilleveryotherguiltysinnerwhothrowshimselfinutterhelplessness,tobefreelyforgiven,andfreelysaved,bythegreatgraceofGodinChristJesus.Letnonesuppose,then,thatanysacrificewhichwecanrendercanevermakeuspartakersofthegreatsalvationoncepurchasedbytheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist.Thissalvationisgivenonaltogetherdifferentterms.Itisgivenasafreegifttothosewhocanproducenothing;agiftbestowedinunfetteredmercyonthosewhocanonlysay,inthelanguageofthehymn:—Wesee,then,thattheministryofreconciliationisneitherbysacrifice,norbypriestlyforgiveness;butwehavestilltoconsiderbywhatmeansthegreatworkiscarriedon.
