Now,suchadoctrineseemstomesoutterlycontrarytoallthatwearetaughtintheScripturesrespectingtheperfectionandconsequentonenessoftheoneofferingofourBlessedLordupontheCross,thatIamutterlyunabletocomprehendhowanypersonwhotakestheScripturesastheirauthoritycan,byanyprocessofmind,bebroughttobelieveit.AsIhavealreadysaid,thesechaptersseemtohavebeenwrittenwithapropheticreferencetoit;andIdonothesitatetoexpressmyfirmandfixedconviction,thatifwemeantoabidebyGod’swordasourguide,wemustprotestagainstthewholemovement.Normustweallowourselvestobeledawaybythereligiousfeelingsofpiousandearnestmen;orpermittheholyreverencewithwhich,asbelievingcommunicants,p.30weregardtheholycommunionofthebodyandbloodofChrist,toinduceustothinklightlyofadeadlyerror,eventhoughmenmakeuseofitinorder,apparently,toexaltthepeculiarsanctityofthesacrament.WemuststandfirmtothegreatprincipleofScripture;theprincipleforwhichourmartyredReformersdidnothesitatetoshedtheirlife-blood,thatthebreadisbread,andthewinewine,afterconsecration,justastheywerebeforeit;thatneithertheonenortheotherischangedintotheLordJesusChrist;thattheLordJesusChristisnotsacrificedinthesacrament;andthattherenevercanbe,solongastheworldlasts,anyfurthersacrificeforsin.WhentheLordJesusChristdiedonthecross,tousethelanguageofourChurch,He“madethere(byHisoneoblationofHimselfonceoffered)afull,perfect,andsufficientsacrifice,oblation,andsatisfaction,forthesinsofthewholeworld:”and,unlesswearepreparedtodenythesufficiencyoftheonecompleteatonement,wemustsetourfacewithaholydeterminationagainstallideasofrepetition,orperpetuation,ofanypropitiatorysacrificeforsin.3.Evenifthesewordsweretakenliterally,theywouldnotteachthedoctrineofRome.

Insupportofthisviewofthepassageitshouldbeobserved,thatHedoesnotsaythatthesinsareremittedinheaven,orbyGod,orbyHimself;butsimplysaystheyareremitted,asthoughHehadsaid,“Igiveyoufullauthoritytodecide;andwhenyoudoso,thedecisionisfinal.”Ifthisbethetrueviewofthepassage,wecanperfectlyunderstandtheuseofitintheOrdinationService.ThewholeChurchcannotexercisethispower,andmustdeputeittoexecutiveofficers.Theseofficersaretheelders,orpresbyters,orpriests;and,therefore,whentheyareordained,theBishopfirstasksthem,“Willp.62yougiveyourfaithfuldiligencealwayssotoadministerthedoctrine,andsacraments,anddisciplineofChrist,astheLordhathcommanded,andasthisChurchandnationhathreceivedthesame?”Andafterthecommissionhasbeengivenheadds,“AndbethouafaithfulDispenseroftheWordofGod,andofHisholySacraments.”
