Ineveryworkcarriedonbymanweareperfectlycertaintomeetwithhumaninfirmity,andhumanerror;andtheworkoftheministryformsnoexceptiontotherule.Itiscarriedonbycommonmen,withcommonfleshandblood,exposedtothecommontemptationsofcommonlife,sothatwearesuretofindinitthecommonfailuresofourcommonhumanity.Yet,withallthis,itfillsamostimportantplaceinthelifeofallofus.Itnotonlyimpartsadistinctivecharactertoourpublicworship,butitreachesourhomelife;sothatthereisnotafamilyinaparishthatisnot,insomewayorother,moreorlessaffectedbytheministryinp.47theChurch.Theinfluencemaynotalwaysbeforgood,butitalwaysexists.Insomecasesitmaybesimplynegative,andactuallydoharmbynotdoinggood.Insomecasesitmaybepositivelymischievous,aswhenitismadethemeansforthedisseminationofdeadlyerror.WhileinmanyitismadeGod’smeansforconferringincalculableblessings;sothatthroughittheyoungareinstructed,thecarelessawakened,inquirersdirectedtotheLordJesusChrist,andthechildrenofGodconfirmedinfaithandarousedtoholyenergyfortheirLord.Thepositionofaclergymanissuchthattheinfluenceofhisministryissuretobefeltthroughouthisparish.Hehasthesacredprivilegeofleadingtheworshipofthereligiousportionofhispeople.Theyareallbroughtintocontactwithhisoffice,andallare,somewayorother,affectedbythemannerinwhichthatofficeisfulfilled.

p.34ButstillwereadinScriptureofanothersacrifice—asacrificewhichChristianpeoplearecalledtooffer.ThusinthistextSt.Paulsays,“Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holyandacceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”TothisappealthewordsinourCommunionServicearetheChristian’sreply:— “Andhereweofferandpresentuntotheeourselves,oursoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivingsacrificeuntothee.”Itclearlyremains,therefore,forustoexaminethecharacterofthissecondsacrifice,andalsoitsrelationshiptothegreatandperfectsacrificecompletedonthecrossforsin.This,then,ifGodpermit,shallbeoursubjectthismorning.MaytheLorddisposeourheartstobringtoHimthisholysacrifice,thatwe,ifwelive,maylivenotuntoourselves,butuntoHim“thatdiedforus,androseagain!”

IhavequotedthepassagefromRomeinwhichitsaysthereis“body,soul,anddivinity.”Butwhatdoesanyoneofthosepassagessayaboutsoulanddivinity?IfHehadmeanttoteachusthatthebreadwaschangedintoHisbrokenbody,whatonewordisthereaboutthesoul,ortheGodhead?AllthatisaddedbyRome,andthewholefabricofsuperstitionbaseduponitiswithoutashadowoffoundationinthewordofGod.Itisavastsuperstructure,but,asfarastheteachingofHolyScriptureisconcerned,utterlybaseless.

Letmebrieflygiveyoufourreasons.

IhavequotedthepassagefromRomeinwhichitsaysthereis“body,soul,anddivinity.”Butwhatdoesanyoneofthosepassagessayaboutsoulanddivinity?IfHehadmeanttoteachusthatthebreadwaschangedintoHisbrokenbody,whatonewordisthereaboutthesoul,ortheGodhead?AllthatisaddedbyRome,andthewholefabricofsuperstitionbaseduponitiswithoutashadowoffoundationinthewordofGod.Itisavastsuperstructure,but,asfarastheteachingofHolyScriptureisconcerned,utterlybaseless.Butwemustnotleavethematterthere,foritisnotenoughforustobedeeplyconvincedp.31thatthedoctrineoftheMassisopposedtothewholetruthofGod,forsuchaconviction,thoughitmaykeepusclearofRome,willnot,ifitbeall,bringustoGod.Whatwewantisnotmerelyaconvictionofthetruth,butapersonalappropriationofitinourownhearts.Itisablessedthingtoknowthataperfectsacrificehasbeenoffered,andthatnofurthersacrificeiseithernecessaryorpossible;butthatknowledge,blessedasitis,mayleavetheheartdissatisfied,andtheconscienceillatease.Whenthatisthecase,wecannotbesurprisedatpersonsrestlesslyfeelingafteranythingthatpromisespeace;andIbelievethereisnostateofmindinwhichpersonsaresoliabletobeledawaybyRome,aswhentheconscienceisawakened,buttheheartnotatrestinChristtheSaviour.ItiswhenwecanlooktothatcrossofChrist,assuredthattheatonementtheremadewassufficientevenforus,andwhenwecanrestintheconvictionthat,becausetheatonementwassufficient,we,evenwe,arefree;andwhenwelearntorest,notonfeelings,notonsacraments,notonourdoingsofanykindwhatever,butsimplyonthegreat,grand,gloriousfact,thatafullpropitiationhasbeenmadeevenforthechiefofsinners,sothatwe,thoughthechiefp.32ofsinners,arenolongerundertheguiltofsin;thenitisthatwediscoverthestrengthoftherockunderourfeet,and,restingonit,weneednootherstay.Itisenough,forChristhathdied,andthroughHimGodisreconciled.Blessed!oh,blessedthatChristianbeliever,whocanthusrestinaperfectSaviour;andbekeptinperfectpeacethroughtheSaviour’sperfectwork!

3.Oncemore:thesacrificeinvolvesthefreegiftofmoney.Moneywithmostmenliesveryneartheheart.Opentheheart,andyouopenthepurse.Lettheheartbecomedull,lifeless,cold,andunfeeling,andthepursesooncloses.ThusthesacrificeofSelfisalmostsuretoleadtotheofferingofmoney.Coldheartsgivelittle;butwhentheheartisfulltheofferingsflowfreely.ThemenofMacedoniawerepoorpeople,butnosoonerhadtheygiventheirownselvestotheLordthan“theabundanceoftheirjoy,andtheirdeeppoverty,aboundeduntotherichesoftheirliberality.”Nowtheseofferingsp.39aredescribedintheScripturesasasacrificetoGod.St.Paulalludestothem,inPhilip,iv.18.Itisnotperfectlyclearwhetherhealludestoacontributiontowardshisownmaintenance,ortothecollectioninwhichhetooksodeepaninterestforthepoorsaintsinJerusalem;but,eitherway,hedescribestheofferingsasanodourofasweetsmell,a“sacrificeacceptable,wellpleasingtoGod.”ThisgivesadelightfulviewofcontributionsinarightspiritfortheserviceoftheLord.ItshowsthatthefreeandgenerousgivertherebyoffersasacrificewellpleasingtoGod.Itrebukesatthesametimetheniggardlyandparsimoniousspirit,thespiritthatgivesreluctantly,andcomplainsofmanycalls.YetIverilybelievethattogivefreelycanscarcelybecalledasacrifice,fornomoneygivessomuchpleasureasthatfreelyofferedtotheLord’sservice;andnopeopleenjoypropertysomuchastheydowhoarefreeandopen-heartedgivers.Ihavenottheslightesthesitation,therefore,inappealingtoyouforfreeandgenerousofferings,forIcansayasSt.Paulsaid(Philip,iv.17),“Idesirefruitthatmayaboundtoyouraccount;”andIamthoroughlypersuaded,thatnopersonwhoisinducedtogivefreelywilleverrepentofp.40“asacrificeacceptableandwellpleasingtoGod.”

Onethingisperfectlyclear.Itisnotdonebytheofferingofanyfreshsacrifice.ThiswasthechiefdutyoftheJewishpriests,butitformsnopartofthatoftheChristianminister.FromoneendoftheNewTestamenttothep.56otheryoucanfindnoallusiontoanysuchthingasaChristiansacrificeforsin.TheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChristwasonceandforever,final,complete,andsufficientforallthesinsofthewholeworld.Theworkofsacrificeisfinished,aswearetaughtinthewords,“Towit,thatGodwasinChristreconcilingtheworlduntohimself;”andiftherecanbenosacrifice,itisperfectlyplainthattherecanbenosacrificingpriest.NorcantheideabegatheredfromthePrayer-bookanymorethanitcanfromtheNewTestament.Thereisnotanallusionthere,eithertoasacrificeorasacrificingpriest,exceptwhereitsays,inArt.xxxi.,“Thesacrificesofmasses,inthewhichitwascommonlysaidthatthepriestdidofferChristforthequickandthedead,tohaveremissionofpainorguilt,wereblasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.”ThereisnoChristiansacrificerecognisedbytheChurchofEnglandbutthethankfuldedicationofheartandlifeonthepartofthosewhohavebeensavedbythesacrificeoftheLord.Butthissacrificerequiresnopriesttoofferit.Itmayriseatanymoment,andfromanyplace,fromthedepthsofanythankfulheart.Thus,accordingtoourCommunionService,allofferp.57ittogether,andthewholecongregationhavingtogethermetaroundtheirFather’stable,andtogethertastedthejoysoftheirFather’slove,togetherbringtheirsacrifice,andsay,“Hereweofferandpresentuntothee,OLord,ourselves,oursoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivingsacrificeuntothee.”

Nowallthisiscomplete—itisfinished;itwasaDivineact,andmancanaddnothingtoit.But,notwithstandingallthisboundlessmercy,manremainsunchanged—asinnerstill,andanalienfromGod.ThoughbyatonementGodislegallyreconciledtohim,heremains,throughignoranceandhardnessofheart,unreconciledtoGod;asfarfromlife,therefore,asifnothinghadeverbeendoneforhissalvation.Andnowyouseeatoncetheofficeoftheministry.Theministerofreconciliationistobethebearertohisfellow-sinnersofthegreatreconciliationwroughtoutforusinChristJesus.HeisemployedbytheHolyGhostasahumaninstrumentforbringingthosewhoarestillunreconciledintothesacredprivilegeofreconciliationwithGod.SinnersreconciledtoGod,therefore,arethegreatresultoftheministry.Itisverydelightfultoseeafullchurchandattentivecongregation;veryencouragingtoseelargeschoolswelltaughtandwellfilled—averygreatcauseofthankfulnesstoseekindnessp.55andgoodfeelingprevailinginaparish.Butallthesethingsfallshortofthegreatresult.TherealresultisthereconciliationofprecioussoulstotheLordJesusChristbythebloodofatonementshedfortheirsinsonthecross.TherealresultisconversiontoGod,anewbirthbythepoweroftheHolyGhost;andifthatbewanting,thoughallbesideseemprosperous,theministerofreconciliationshouldbebroughtonhiskneeswithgreatsearchingofheart,andneverresttillhecanlookonprecioussoulsreconciledtoGod,towhomhemaysay,asSt.PauldidtotheCorinthians,“Suchweresomeofyou:butyearewashed,butyearesanctified,butyearejustifiedinthenameoftheLordJesus,andbytheSpiritofourGod.”

“Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holy,acceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”

    Again:itisnottheofficeoftheministertoforgivesins.IfourLord,inHiswordsofJohnxx.23,hadreallyconnectedsuchapowerwiththeministryofreconciliation,itismostextraordinarythatinallthemanyportionsoftheNewTestamentwhichrelatetotheministrythereisnoallusiontoit.TherearethreewholeEpistlesdirectedexclusivelytothechiefpastorsoftheChurch,besidesseveraladdressestopresbytersbothintheActsandEpistles;andisitnotamostremarkablefact,thatthereisnotasingleallusioninanyoneofthesepassagesorepistlestotheforgivenessofsins,asformingaportionoftheministryofreconciliation?Therearefulldirectionsrespectingpreaching,praying,reproving,instructing,andbehaviourtoallthedifferentclassesoftheflock,butofforgivenessofsinbytheminister,notonewordcanyoufindanywhere;andyetforgivenessitselfisthegreatsubjectofthep.58wholeNewTestament.Butitisalwaystracedatonce,withoutanyintermediatemediation,totheLordHimself.ItisalwaysascribedtoHisblood,Hisredemption,andHisgrace,andisneveronceconnectedinanywaywithanypowerofforgivenessbestowedbyapriest.Iamnotnowdwellingonanyoneparticularpassage,butratherontheomissionofthewholesubjectfromthewordofGod;andIcannotbutthinkthatthatomissionisaproof,beyondcontradiction,thattheApostles,writingbyinspiration,didnotunderstandourLordasteachinginthesewordsthattheforgivenessofsinbyapriestformedanypartoftheministryofreconciliation.
