Butwemustnotleavethematterthere,foritisnotenoughforustobedeeplyconvincedp.31thatthedoctrineoftheMassisopposedtothewholetruthofGod,forsuchaconviction,thoughitmaykeepusclearofRome,willnot,ifitbeall,bringustoGod.Whatwewantisnotmerelyaconvictionofthetruth,butapersonalappropriationofitinourownhearts.Itisablessedthingtoknowthataperfectsacrificehasbeenoffered,andthatnofurthersacrificeiseithernecessaryorpossible;butthatknowledge,blessedasitis,mayleavetheheartdissatisfied,andtheconscienceillatease.Whenthatisthecase,wecannotbesurprisedatpersonsrestlesslyfeelingafteranythingthatpromisespeace;andIbelievethereisnostateofmindinwhichpersonsaresoliabletobeledawaybyRome,aswhentheconscienceisawakened,buttheheartnotatrestinChristtheSaviour.ItiswhenwecanlooktothatcrossofChrist,assuredthattheatonementtheremadewassufficientevenforus,andwhenwecanrestintheconvictionthat,becausetheatonementwassufficient,we,evenwe,arefree;andwhenwelearntorest,notonfeelings,notonsacraments,notonourdoingsofanykindwhatever,butsimplyonthegreat,grand,gloriousfact,thatafullpropitiationhasbeenmadeevenforthechiefofsinners,sothatwe,thoughthechiefp.32ofsinners,arenolongerundertheguiltofsin;thenitisthatwediscoverthestrengthoftherockunderourfeet,and,restingonit,weneednootherstay.Itisenough,forChristhathdied,andthroughHimGodisreconciled.Blessed!oh,blessedthatChristianbeliever,whocanthusrestinaperfectSaviour;andbekeptinperfectpeacethroughtheSaviour’sperfectwork!

Butthisministryofthewordofreconciliationwillvaryaccordingtocircumstances.

3.Thatthissacrificeisasacrificeofpropitiationforsin.Thereisasacrificeofself-dedication,whicheverylovingheartisrequiredtooffer:asinthewordsaftertheLord’sSupper,— “HereweofferandpresentuntoTheeourselves,outsoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivelysacrificeuntoThee.”Butinthatcasetheofferingisourselves,andthemotiveisnotpropitiation,butdedication.AccordingtotheteachingofRometheofferingistheLordJesusChrist,andtheobjectistomakeapropitiationforsin.Amanmightbringanynumberoflambs,goats,andbullocks,andlaythemallonthealtar;but,unlessbytheeyeoffaithhelookedtoChrist,hewould,afterall,carryguiltwithhiminhisconscience;andthestillsmallvoicewithinwouldbringhiminguiltybeforeGod.Thesenseofguiltdemandedrepetition;butp.26unlesstheheartlookedforward,throughthatsacrifice,tothecomingChrist,nooffering,howeveroftenrepeated,wassufficient:theconscienceremaineduneasystill,andthesenseofguiltclungtothesoul.

Nor,again,isthissacrificethemeanswherebythegreatsacrificeisappliedtothesoul.Thisp.41isamorecommonideathantheother,andoneprevailingamongmanywhoarethoroughlyopposedtoPopery.ItisinharmonywithhumannaturetosupposethatwemustmakeoursacrificeinordertogainashareoftheblessingsofHis.Thuspeoplewillsometimesgiveup,firstonething,andthenanother,hopingbythesesacrificestofindpeacethroughthebloodofatonementoftheLordJesusChrist.TheyhavenoideaofbeingsavedthroughanythingbutthegreatsacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist;buttheyconsiderthattheymustmaketheirsacrificeinordertosecuretheapplicationofhisworktothemselves.Thisistheprincipleofalmostallself-imposedmortifications.Peoplehopethroughthemtobepartakersofreconciliationthroughthegreatatonement.Yetnoneofthesethingssatisfythesoul.Ihavemyselfknownpersonswhohaveresolutelymadetheeffort,bututterlyfailed.Theyhavebecomeanxiousabouttheirsoul,andsettoworktoreachthecrossofChristbypersonalself-denial.Theyhavegivenuptheirdifferentpursuitsonebyone;butatlengththeyhavefoundthatnothinghasdonethemanygood.Theyhavebeenjustasfarfromthepeaceofreconciliationastheyp.42werethedaytheybegan.Noneofthesesacrificeshadhelpedthemintheleast.No,andnonecouldhelpthem.Nothingcouldhelpthembutafreejustificationthroughfaith,andfaithalone;andthat,thankGod!atlasttheyhavefoundsufficient.Andsowilleveryotherguiltysinnerwhothrowshimselfinutterhelplessness,tobefreelyforgiven,andfreelysaved,bythegreatgraceofGodinChristJesus.Letnonesuppose,then,thatanysacrificewhichwecanrendercanevermakeuspartakersofthegreatsalvationoncepurchasedbytheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChrist.Thissalvationisgivenonaltogetherdifferentterms.Itisgivenasafreegifttothosewhocanproducenothing;agiftbestowedinunfetteredmercyonthosewhocanonlysay,inthelanguageofthehymn:—SELF-SACRIFICE.

Butthisministryofthewordofreconciliationwillvaryaccordingtocircumstances.

ButourLord’swordsmayhavebeenaddressedtothewholecompany;andifso,thelaity,andeventhewomen,hadasgreatashareinthemasanyothers.Now,noonesupposesthateveryChristianhasthepowerofforgivingsin;andtheonlywayofunderstandingourLord’slanguageistoregardHiswordsasconveyingtoHisChurchthepowerofChristiandiscipline.Itisclearthatsuchapowerisessentialtothewell-beingofthebody;fortheChurchwouldceasetobeaChurchifitsmostsacredprivilegeswereopenindiscriminatelytoallkindsofcharacters.Theremustbetherightofexcludingthewicked,ofadmittingconverts,p.61ofexcommunicatingthosewhodisgracetheirprofession,andofrestoringsuchpersonswhentheChurchissatisfiedrespectingtheirrepentance.Butthisauthority,ifitisnotgivenhere,isgivennowhere.WhenourLordsaid,aswereadinMatt.xviii.18,“Whatsoeveryeshallbindonearthshallbeboundinheaven:andwhatsoeveryeshalllooseonearthshallbeloosedinheaven;”HegaveHisdisciplesthepowerofregulatingChurchorder;anditisreasonabletosupposethatinthesewordsHegivesasimilarauthoritywithreferencetopersons,forintheonepassageitsays“whatsoever,”andintheother“whomsoever.”

Hisplace,then,isheavenitself;andHisseatattherighthandofthethroneoftheFather.InHisrealhumanbodyHehaseverbeenlikeourselves,inoneplaceatonetime.WhenHewasherehepassedfromplacetoplace;fromGalileetoJerusalem,andfromJerusalemtoGalilee.SowhenLazarusdiedHewasabsentfromBethany,andafterhisdeathHewentthere.JustsoinHisascensionHepassedintotheheavens,and,beingthere,HeisasmuchabsentfromusinthebodyasHewasabsentfromMarthaandMaryintheirdeepanxietyabouttheirbrother.Whenpresenthere,inHishumanperson,Hewasabsentthere.Beingpresentthere,Heisnowabsenthere.[6]Inx.3,4,wearedistinctlytaughtthattheonereasonwhythesesacrificeswererepeatedwas,thatitwasimpossibleforthemtobeeffectualinremovingguilt.“Inthosesacrificesthereisaremembranceagainmadeofsinseveryyear.Foritisnotpossiblethatthebloodofbullsandofgoatsshouldtakeawaysins.”Thedarkstainofsinisfartoodreadfulathingtobeblottedoutbythebloodofanyanimal.Thosesacrificesdidverywellasremembrancers.Theyweredailyreminders,anddailyacknowledgmentsofguilt;butasforputtingitaway,theyhadnovirtueinthem,andtheyp.25werepowerless.Theyweremostimportantlikewiseastypes;ashelpingbelievers,withtheeyeoffaith,tolookonandtrusttotheonesufficientsacrificeoftheLord;andsobelievers,lookingtoChristasrepresentedintheslainlamb,could,throughfaithinHim,findpardonandpeacetotheirsouls.Butinthemselvestheywereutterlypowerless,fornothingshortoftheperfectsacrificeoftheSonofGodcouldeverreallytakeawaysin.

This,then,isthemightyworkofGodinChrist:andthispassageprovesitsnature;andshowsthatitconsists,notinthechangeofdispositionp.53inman,butinthenon-imputationofsinonthepartofGod,— “Towit,thatGodwasinChrist,reconcilingtheworlduntoHimself,notimputingtheirtrespassesuntothem.”Youobservethatthewordsteachthatthereweretrespassesandrealguilt:suchtrespassesthat,iftheywereimputed,orallowedtostandforthecondemnationofthesinner,therecouldbenoreconciliation,andthesinnermustdie.ButGodinChristdoesnotimputeourtrespassesuntous:and,therefore,thebarrierisremoved;andinHimthereiscompletereconciliation.Butwehavenotyetdonewiththesubject;forthequestionarises,HowisitconsistentwiththerighteousnessofGod,thatHeshouldthusnotimputetrespassestothosewhoarereallyguilty?WhathasbecomeofHisgovernment,ifrealguiltisnotreckonedtotherealsinner?Thequestionisansweredinv.21:forwearetheretaughtthatguiltisnotimputedtous,because,inthemarvellouscounselofGod,ithasbeenimputedtotheLordJesusChristinourstead:forlookathiswords,— “ForHehathmadeHimwhoknewnosintobesinforus,thatwemightbemadetherighteousnessofGodinHim.”Thereisnoexplanationofthispassage,exceptthatHewhoknewnosinwasp.54reckonedsinful,inorderthatwe,whoaredeeplysunkinsin,mightbereckonedrighteous.Sinisnotimputedtoman;becausetheLordJesusChristbecameoursubstitute;andithasbeenimputedtoHiminourstead.

     What,then,istherelationshipbetweenoursacrificeandHis?andhowaretheyconnected?Therecanbenodoubtonthissubjectifweturntothetext,whereweread,“Ibeseechyoutherefore,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice.”Itis,therefore,thedeepsenseofunmeritedmercythatistop.43calloutthewillingsacrificefromasavedandthankfulpeople.ThisisjusthowitstandsinourCommunionService.Wefirstcomewiththeconfessionofsin;wethenpartakeofthesacredfeast;andseek,byGod’sgrace,torealiseinlivingfaiththebodybrokenandthebloodshedforoursins;afterwhich,butnotbefore,we“offerandpresenttoHimourselves,oursoulsandourbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivelysacrificeuntoHim.”Oursacrifice,therefore,istheresultofourdeepsenseofunmeritedmercyshowninHisperfectsacrificeonthecross.Itisasacrificeofpraiseandthanksgiving.Itisthewillingofferingofthosewhohavefoundmercy,andaremostdeeplyandhumblythankfulforit.

     I.What,then,isthenatureofthesacrifice?or,Whatisitwearetooffer?Itisnotalamb,oragoat,orabullock,but,accordingtothelanguageofourCommunionService,theofferingwhichwearetorenderisourselves.“Hereweofferandpresentuntotheeourselves,oursoulsandbodies.”Justsowereadofthep.35churchesofMacedonia,“thattheyfirstgavetheirownselvesuntotheLord.”Amoment’sthoughtwillsufficetoshowthatsuchasacrificeasthisismuchmorecostlythananyother.Itwouldbealightmattertosacrificeabullock,butitisaverycostlyonetosacrificeSelf—aneasythingforthewealthyprincetobringathousandlambstothealtar,butahardthingforeitherrichorpoortobringhisownwilltobecrucifiedwithChrist.
