Thetextstandsveryneartheconclusionofamostimportantargument,inwhichtheApostlehasbeendrawingthecontrastbetweentheJewishsacrificesundertheceremoniallawandtheoneperfectsacrificewroughtoutforusbyp.19theSonofGodonthecross.Thecontrastcommenceswiththe25thverseofthe9thchapter,andextendstothe14thverseofthe10th;afterwhichweareledtothepracticalapplicationofthewholeepistle.Letus,then,first,carefullystudythepointofcontrast,andthenthereasonofit.

I.What,then,isthenatureofthesacrifice?or,Whatisitwearetooffer?Itisnotalamb,oragoat,orabullock,but,accordingtothelanguageofourCommunionService,theofferingwhichwearetorenderisourselves.“Hereweofferandpresentuntotheeourselves,oursoulsandbodies.”Justsowereadofthep.35churchesofMacedonia,“thattheyfirstgavetheirownselvesuntotheLord.”Amoment’sthoughtwillsufficetoshowthatsuchasacrificeasthisismuchmorecostlythananyother.Itwouldbealightmattertosacrificeabullock,butitisaverycostlyonetosacrificeSelf—aneasythingforthewealthyprincetobringathousandlambstothealtar,butahardthingforeitherrichorpoortobringhisownwilltobecrucifiedwithChrist.

Itfollows,therefore,thatthesubjectoftheministryisonerespectingwhichitisofgreatimportancethatourviewsshouldbescriptural.Andyet,forobviousreasons,itisoneseldompreachedupon.ThegreatobjectoftheservantoftheLordistothrowSelfoutofsight;anditissohardtodisconnecttheofficefromtheofficep.48bearer,thattoolittleisoftensaidabouttheofficefromthefearthattoomuchattentionshouldbedrawntotheman.Itwillbewell,therefore,forustotakethesubjectoftheministryforourcarefulstudythismorning.AndmayGodenablemesotospeak,andyousotohear,thatwemayallreceiveGod’swordinfaith,andmay,together,becompactedasaholypeopleintheLord!

WhenIdrewyourattentiontothistextonSundaylast,Ipointedoutthetwogreatsubjectscontainedinit,viz.theworkofatonementcompletedbyourblessedLordonearth,andHispresentsessionattherighthandofGod.ThelatterofthesewestudiedonSundaylast,buttheformerisofsuchvastimportancetoeveryoneofusthatitwouldbewrongtoleavethepassagewithoutdevotingthismorningtothecarefulexaminationofit.Then,again,withtheplacetherehasbeenacompletechangeinHisemployment.HewasheretofoundHiskingdomandtomakeatonement.Heistheretocarryouttheresultsofthatatonementandtoreign.Hisofficewasrepresentedbythehighpriestofold,whofirstintheoutercourtofferedthesacrifice,andp.7afterwardswentinbeforethemercy-seattosprinkletheblood.SoChristJesushereonearthofferedHimselfasthesacrifice,andnowHeisgoneintotheholyofholiestheretopresentthebloodbeforethemercy-seatofGod.ThusHeisdescribedbySt.Peter(Acts,v.31)asbeingexaltedtobea“PrinceandaSaviour;”aPrince,becauseHeisexaltedasKingofkingsandLordoflords;aSaviour,becauseasalivingfriend,Heissavingthosewhom,whenonearth,HeredeemedbyHisblood.Everypassage,therefore,whichdescribesHiminHispresentcondition,representsHimasinthepossessionoflivingpower.SometimesHeissaidtobereigning,as(1Cor.xv.25),“HemustreigntillHehathputallenemiesunderHisfeet.”SometimesweseeHimasthePriest(Heb.iv.14),“SeeingthenthatwehaveagreatHighPriest,thatispassedintotheheavens,JesustheSonofGod.”SometimesHeistheAdvocate(1John,ii.1,2),“IfanymansinwehaveanAdvocatewiththeFather,JesusChristtherighteous;”andsometimesHeisthelovingFriend,watchingthestrugglesofHisfaithfuldisciples,andwaitingtowelcomeHisdyingservantinthesolemnmomentsofhisroughandstormymartyrdom.p.8“Behold,”saidStephen,“Iseetheheavensopened,andtheSonofManstandingattherighthandofGod;”andso,havingseenit,hefollowedupthevisionbythedyingprayer,“LordJesus,receivemyspirit.”(Acts,vii.56.)

p.11Thewafer,therefore,orthepieceofbread,isheresaidtobeafterconsecrationnothinglessthanareal,livingSaviour,withbody,soul,anddivinity,tobeworshippedwiththatholy,reverentialworshipwhichbelongsexclusivelytotheGodofheavenandearth,forthatisthemeaningofthewordLatreia.Thereissomethingveryawfulinsuchastatement.ItshowsthattherecanbenopeacewithRome—nocompromise,nomiddlepath.Iftheyareright,weareawfullywrong.Ifweareright,theyareguiltyofidolatry.IfallthesepiecesofbreadarelivingSaviours,wehavebeenterriblyguiltyinneverworshippinganyoneofthem;butif,ontheotherhand,theyhaveremainedbreadstill—plain,simple,unchangedbread—thenwehaveidolatryofthemostunquestionablecharacterwhenthatbreadisexaltedbythepriestforadoration,andmenfalldownandworshipitasthelivingGod.

ButhereaquestionwillariseinthemindsofallthosewhoreallydesiretomakethissacrificetotheLord,viz.Whatdoesitpracticallyinvolve?Whatistherealmeaningofit?Whatwillbethepracticalresultofsuchasacrificeinourownlifeandcharacter?Somewilltellusthatitinvolvesthenecessityofconventuallife,aseparationfromcommonduties,andtheseclusionofanunnery,orthevowsofasisterhood.Letanyonereadthischapterthrough,andhewillseeataglancethatthisisnotthemeaningoftheApostle.Therearenorulesthereforamonasticorder,butthereareveryfulldirectionsforcommonbusiness,andcommonlife.Allsuchideas,therefore,maybedismissedatonce.Thatisnotthemeaningofthesacrifice.Then,whatis?Whatp.36isthesacrificewhichwe,livingathome,aretooffertoGod?

p.6ThewordsteachusthatatthepresenttimeourBlessedLordandSaviourisattherighthandofGod,andtheysuggesttwosubjects,Hisplace,andHisemployment.p.34ButstillwereadinScriptureofanothersacrifice—asacrificewhichChristianpeoplearecalledtooffer.ThusinthistextSt.Paulsays,“Ibeseechyoutherefore,brethren,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holyandacceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”TothisappealthewordsinourCommunionServicearetheChristian’sreply:— “Andhereweofferandpresentuntotheeourselves,oursoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivingsacrificeuntothee.”Itclearlyremains,therefore,forustoexaminethecharacterofthissecondsacrifice,andalsoitsrelationshiptothegreatandperfectsacrificecompletedonthecrossforsin.This,then,ifGodpermit,shallbeoursubjectthismorning.MaytheLorddisposeourheartstobringtoHimthisholysacrifice,thatwe,ifwelive,maylivenotuntoourselves,butuntoHim“thatdiedforus,androseagain!”

Ineveryworkcarriedonbymanweareperfectlycertaintomeetwithhumaninfirmity,andhumanerror;andtheworkoftheministryformsnoexceptiontotherule.Itiscarriedonbycommonmen,withcommonfleshandblood,exposedtothecommontemptationsofcommonlife,sothatwearesuretofindinitthecommonfailuresofourcommonhumanity.Yet,withallthis,itfillsamostimportantplaceinthelifeofallofus.Itnotonlyimpartsadistinctivecharactertoourpublicworship,butitreachesourhomelife;sothatthereisnotafamilyinaparishthatisnot,insomewayorother,moreorlessaffectedbytheministryinp.47theChurch.Theinfluencemaynotalwaysbeforgood,butitalwaysexists.Insomecasesitmaybesimplynegative,andactuallydoharmbynotdoinggood.Insomecasesitmaybepositivelymischievous,aswhenitismadethemeansforthedisseminationofdeadlyerror.WhileinmanyitismadeGod’smeansforconferringincalculableblessings;sothatthroughittheyoungareinstructed,thecarelessawakened,inquirersdirectedtotheLordJesusChrist,andthechildrenofGodconfirmedinfaithandarousedtoholyenergyfortheirLord.Thepositionofaclergymanissuchthattheinfluenceofhisministryissuretobefeltthroughouthisparish.Hehasthesacredprivilegeofleadingtheworshipofthereligiousportionofhispeople.Theyareallbroughtintocontactwithhisoffice,andallare,somewayorother,affectedbythemannerinwhichthatofficeisfulfilled.

What,then,istherelationshipbetweenoursacrificeandHis?andhowaretheyconnected?Therecanbenodoubtonthissubjectifweturntothetext,whereweread,“Ibeseechyoutherefore,bythemerciesofGod,thatyepresentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice.”Itis,therefore,thedeepsenseofunmeritedmercythatistop.43calloutthewillingsacrificefromasavedandthankfulpeople.ThisisjusthowitstandsinourCommunionService.Wefirstcomewiththeconfessionofsin;wethenpartakeofthesacredfeast;andseek,byGod’sgrace,torealiseinlivingfaiththebodybrokenandthebloodshedforoursins;afterwhich,butnotbefore,we“offerandpresenttoHimourselves,oursoulsandourbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivelysacrificeuntoHim.”Oursacrifice,therefore,istheresultofourdeepsenseofunmeritedmercyshowninHisperfectsacrificeonthecross.Itisasacrificeofpraiseandthanksgiving.Itisthewillingofferingofthosewhohavefoundmercy,andaremostdeeplyandhumblythankfulforit.
