Butwemustnotleavethematterthere,foritisnotenoughforustobedeeplyconvincedp.31thatthedoctrineoftheMassisopposedtothewholetruthofGod,forsuchaconviction,thoughitmaykeepusclearofRome,willnot,ifitbeall,bringustoGod.Whatwewantisnotmerelyaconvictionofthetruth,butapersonalappropriationofitinourownhearts.Itisablessedthingtoknowthataperfectsacrificehasbeenoffered,andthatnofurthersacrificeiseithernecessaryorpossible;butthatknowledge,blessedasitis,mayleavetheheartdissatisfied,andtheconscienceillatease.Whenthatisthecase,wecannotbesurprisedatpersonsrestlesslyfeelingafteranythingthatpromisespeace;andIbelievethereisnostateofmindinwhichpersonsaresoliabletobeledawaybyRome,aswhentheconscienceisawakened,buttheheartnotatrestinChristtheSaviour.ItiswhenwecanlooktothatcrossofChrist,assuredthattheatonementtheremadewassufficientevenforus,andwhenwecanrestintheconvictionthat,becausetheatonementwassufficient,we,evenwe,arefree;andwhenwelearntorest,notonfeelings,notonsacraments,notonourdoingsofanykindwhatever,butsimplyonthegreat,grand,gloriousfact,thatafullpropitiationhasbeenmadeevenforthechiefofsinners,sothatwe,thoughthechiefp.32ofsinners,arenolongerundertheguiltofsin;thenitisthatwediscoverthestrengthoftherockunderourfeet,and,restingonit,weneednootherstay.Itisenough,forChristhathdied,andthroughHimGodisreconciled.Blessed!oh,blessedthatChristianbeliever,whocanthusrestinaperfectSaviour;andbekeptinperfectpeacethroughtheSaviour’sperfectwork!

p.21WithallthistheApostlecontraststheoneperfectsacrificeofourblessedLord,madeonthecrossonceandforever.Therearenolessthansixplacesinwhichhebringsoutthisonepoint,andbringsitoutwithsuchclearnessthatitreallyseemsasifthewholepassagewaswrittenasapropheticsafeguardagainstthedoctrineofthemass.InHeb.ix.25,26,hesays:“Noryetthatheshouldofferhimselfoften,asthehighpriestenterethintotheholyplaceeveryyearwithbloodofothers;forthenmustheoftenhavesufferedsincethefoundationoftheworld:butnowonceintheendoftheworldhathheappearedtoputawaysinbythesacrificeofhimself.”Soinvv.27,28,hedrawsacomparisonbetweenthedeathoftheLordJesusandthenaturaldeathofman,andsays:“Asitisappointeduntomenoncetodie,butafterthisthejudgment:soChristwasonceofferedtobearthesinsofmany;anduntothemthatlookforhimshallheappearthesecondtimewithoutsinuntosalvation.”Sothatitwouldbejustasabsurdtoexpectmentodietwice,astobelievethattherecanbeanysecondofferingoftheLordJesusChristforsin.TheonedeaththroughoutmankindisthetypeorpatternoftheoneSacrificeoncep.22madeforsin.So,again,inx.10,weread,— “BythewhichwillwearesanctifiedthroughtheofferingofthebodyofJesusChristonceforall.”Andagain,invv,11,12,St.PaulreturnstothecontrastbetweenourLordandtheJewishpriest,andsays,“Everyprieststandethdailyministeringandofferingoftentimesthesamesacrifices,whichcannevertakeawaysins:butthisman,afterhehadofferedonesacrificeforsinsforever,satdownontherighthandofGod.”Andoncemore,inver.14,hesumsupallbysaying,“ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Itwouldbeamatterofdeepinteresttostudycarefullythemeaningoftheword“perfected”inthismostimportanttext.Itdoesnotmeanperfectinpersonalholiness,i.e.intheinwardworkoftheSpiritonthesoul;butperfectinjustification:perfect,becausethecursewasperfectlyblottedout,thelawbeingperfectlysatisfied,andthesinner,afterpropitiation,perfectlyfree.Butwemustnotstoptodwellonthatnow,ouronepointatpresentisthatthesacrificeoftheLordJesuswasonce,andforever;andthisismostremarkablybroughtoutinthewords,— “ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”

3.Oncemore:thesacrificeinvolvesthefreegiftofmoney.Moneywithmostmenliesveryneartheheart.Opentheheart,andyouopenthepurse.Lettheheartbecomedull,lifeless,cold,andunfeeling,andthepursesooncloses.ThusthesacrificeofSelfisalmostsuretoleadtotheofferingofmoney.Coldheartsgivelittle;butwhentheheartisfulltheofferingsflowfreely.ThemenofMacedoniawerepoorpeople,butnosoonerhadtheygiventheirownselvestotheLordthan“theabundanceoftheirjoy,andtheirdeeppoverty,aboundeduntotherichesoftheirliberality.”Nowtheseofferingsp.39aredescribedintheScripturesasasacrificetoGod.St.Paulalludestothem,inPhilip,iv.18.Itisnotperfectlyclearwhetherhealludestoacontributiontowardshisownmaintenance,ortothecollectioninwhichhetooksodeepaninterestforthepoorsaintsinJerusalem;but,eitherway,hedescribestheofferingsasanodourofasweetsmell,a“sacrificeacceptable,wellpleasingtoGod.”ThisgivesadelightfulviewofcontributionsinarightspiritfortheserviceoftheLord.ItshowsthatthefreeandgenerousgivertherebyoffersasacrificewellpleasingtoGod.Itrebukesatthesametimetheniggardlyandparsimoniousspirit,thespiritthatgivesreluctantly,andcomplainsofmanycalls.YetIverilybelievethattogivefreelycanscarcelybecalledasacrifice,fornomoneygivessomuchpleasureasthatfreelyofferedtotheLord’sservice;andnopeopleenjoypropertysomuchastheydowhoarefreeandopen-heartedgivers.Ihavenottheslightesthesitation,therefore,inappealingtoyouforfreeandgenerousofferings,forIcansayasSt.Paulsaid(Philip,iv.17),“Idesirefruitthatmayaboundtoyouraccount;”andIamthoroughlypersuaded,thatnopersonwhoisinducedtogivefreelywilleverrepentofp.40“asacrificeacceptableandwellpleasingtoGod.”

Onethingisperfectlyclear,thatthesesacrificesarenotasupplementtotheonegreatsacrificeforsin.TheyarenotintendedtosupplyanydeficiencyinthegreatworkofourBlessedLord.Thereisnodeficiencythere;andiftherewere,nothingthatwecoulddowouldsupplyit.Thereisnodeficiency,forbythe“oneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Andifthereweredeficiency,howcouldmansupplyit?Istherenotsomethingdreadfulinthethoughtofapatchworkatonement,partlybytheSonofGodandpartlybyman;partlyperfect,andpartlyimperfect;partlypureinalltheinfinitepurityofGod,andpartlydefiledwithallthedefilementsofafallenandsinfulmanhood?No!thepropitiationisperfect,unmixed,andundefiledforever.ItisthesacrificeoftheSonofGod,anditstandsaloneforalleternity.

Therearemanypointsofdeepinstructioninthispassage,butwehavenottimetodwellonthem.Hereisthefoundationofthewholemessage,viz.adoubleimputation—theimputationofsintotheLordJesus,andtheimputationofrighteousnesstoallthatareinHim.p.67Thereisthetenderearnestnessofentreaty,whichdoesnotmerelylaythemessagebeforethesinnerandleaveitthere,butwithacompassionateurgencyintheLord’snamebeseechesandentreats.Andthereisthemostremarkablefact,thatthesewordsarenotaddressedtotheheathen,ortothosewhohadneverheardofChrist;buttoaChurchofprofessingbelievers,allbaptizedintothenameofJesus:sothatwearebroughttotheconclusion,thatamongstthebaptizedChristiansintheChurchofCorinththerewerethosetowhomitwasstillneedfultomaketheappeal— “WebeseechyouinChrist’sstead,beyereconciledtoGod.”Doesnotthatfactteachus,thatamongstourselvesthesamemessagemaybeequallynecessary,andthat,althoughweareallbaptized,andallprofessingChristians,thereareyetthoseamongstuswhomustbebroughtbacktothegreatelementaryquestionoftheirreconciliationtoGod;fortheyarenotyetreconciled,andnotyetacceptedthroughHisgrace?Toallsuchpersons,then,mustwespeakasSt.Pauldid;andifanypresentarenotyetreconciled,notyetforgiven,notyetjustifiedbeforeGod,look,webeseechyou,atthecrossofChrist;lookatHissubstitutionofp.68Himselfforsinners;lookatthehopeoffullforgivenesssetbeforeyouthroughHisblood;andlisten,Iimploreyou,tothewordsspokenbyHisownauthority,— “AsthoughGoddidbeseechyoubyus:weprayyouinChrist’sstead,beyereconciledtoGod.”

2.Butthesacrificegoesfarther,andinvolvesthededicationofourpowerstotheLord’smostsacredservice.Thetextimpliesthiswhenitsays,“Presentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holyandacceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”Thereisclearly,therefore,tobeservice,—aserviceinvolvingtheactiveuseofhumanpowers.Insomecasesthebodyhasbeenactuallysurrenderedtobleed,orburn,inmartyrdom.ManyanoblemanofGodhasgivenhisbodytobeburntratherthanacknowledgethedoctrineoftheMass.Tothis,however,wearenotcalled.Butstilltheremaybesacrificewithoutmartyrdom,dedicationwithoutdeath,andsuchasurrenderofthelivingpowersasmaycorrespondtothedescription,“Thattheywhichliveshouldnothenceforthliveuntothemselves,butuntoHimthatdiedp.38forthem,androseagain.”Thisisthesecretofthemissionaryspirit;thisitiswhichhasledsomeofthenoblestyoungmeninourUniversitiestoabandonallhomeprospects,andtodevotetheirwholelivestothegreatworkofproclaimingChristindistantlands.This,again,isthespiritthatatthispresenttimeisstirringthousandsofourownpeopleathome,devotedmenanddevotedwomen,tospendtheirliveslabouringforGod,helpingthepoor,comfortingtheafflicted,nursingthesick,andstrivingineverypossiblewaytomakeknownthesweetnessofthesacredNamewhichhasbroughtlifeandpeacetotheirownsouls.
