“分分彩自动挂机咋样”II.Thisthenbeing,Itrust,clear,ournextsubjectwillbetheobjectoftheministry;andthisistaughtveryclearlyinthewords,— “Thep.52ministryofreconciliation.”ThereconciliationofthesinnertoGodisthegreatresult,toattainwhichGodfoundedtheministry.Thequestionhasbeenraisedwhether,bythereconciliationherementioned,ismeantthereconciliationofGodtothesinner,orthereconciliationofthesinnertoGod.Surelybothareincluded.Inourguiltyandruinedconditionthereisadoubleenmity.Man,throughhiscorruption,isatenmitywithGod;andGod,throughHisrighteousness,isatenmitywithrebelliousman.Andasthereisadoubleenmitythroughsin,so,likewise,isthereadoublereconciliationthroughChrist.God,Hislawbeingsatisfied,isreconciledtothesinner;andthesinner,hisheartbeingchanged,isreconcileduntoGod.Onethingisperfectlyclear.Itisnotdonebytheofferingofanyfreshsacrifice.ThiswasthechiefdutyoftheJewishpriests,butitformsnopartofthatoftheChristianminister.FromoneendoftheNewTestamenttothep.56otheryoucanfindnoallusiontoanysuchthingasaChristiansacrificeforsin.TheonesacrificeoftheLordJesusChristwasonceandforever,final,complete,andsufficientforallthesinsofthewholeworld.Theworkofsacrificeisfinished,aswearetaughtinthewords,“Towit,thatGodwasinChristreconcilingtheworlduntohimself;”andiftherecanbenosacrifice,itisperfectlyplainthattherecanbenosacrificingpriest.NorcantheideabegatheredfromthePrayer-bookanymorethanitcanfromtheNewTestament.Thereisnotanallusionthere,eithertoasacrificeorasacrificingpriest,exceptwhereitsays,inArt.xxxi.,“Thesacrificesofmasses,inthewhichitwascommonlysaidthatthepriestdidofferChristforthequickandthedead,tohaveremissionofpainorguilt,wereblasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.”ThereisnoChristiansacrificerecognisedbytheChurchofEnglandbutthethankfuldedicationofheartandlifeonthepartofthosewhohavebeensavedbythesacrificeoftheLord.Butthissacrificerequiresnopriesttoofferit.Itmayriseatanymoment,andfromanyplace,fromthedepthsofanythankfulheart.Thus,accordingtoourCommunionService,allofferp.57ittogether,andthewholecongregationhavingtogethermetaroundtheirFather’stable,andtogethertastedthejoysoftheirFather’slove,togetherbringtheirsacrifice,andsay,“Hereweofferandpresentuntothee,OLord,ourselves,oursoulsandbodies,tobeareasonable,holy,andlivingsacrificeuntothee.”

I.Ontheauthorityoftheministrythistextisperfectlyclear;fortheApostletracesittonohumansourcewhenhesays,“AllthingsareofGod,whohathreconciledustoHimselfbyJesusChrist,andhathgiventoustheministryofreconciliation.”Theministry,therefore,isagiftfromGod,andnotaplanofhumancontrivance.Itisnotanarrangementadoptedp.49bythegreatChristiansocietyasameansforitsownimprovement,butitisaninstitutionbytheauthorityoftheFounderofthatsociety,GodHimself.BoththeofficeandthemenaregiftsfromGod.Inthispassagehespeaksoftheoffice,andsays,“Godhathgivenustheministryofreconciliation;”andinv.19,“hathcommittedtousthewordofreconciliation.”Themen,therefore,receivedtheirofficefromtheirGod.JustsohesaidtoArchippus(Col.iv.17),“TakeheedtotheministrywhichthouhastreceivedintheLord,thatthoufulfilit.”ButperhapsthemoststrikingpassageonthissubjectisSt.Paul’saddresstotheeldersoftheChurchofEphesus,inActs,xx.28;forhethereteachesnotmerelythattheministryingeneralwasgiventotheseelders,butthattheyhadbeenmadebytheHolyGhostoverseersofthatparticularpeopleamongstwhomtheywerecalledtolabour.“Takeheed,therefore,untoyourselves,andtoalltheflock,overwhichtheHolyGhosthathmadeyouoverseers,tofeedtheChurchofGodwhichHehathpurchasedwithHisownblood.”Now,bearinmindthatthesepersonswerenotapostles,norpersonsholdinganyextraordinaryoffice,assomedidinthoseearlydays,butordinaryp.50clergymen;some,probably,ordainedbySt.Paulhimself,andsomebyTimothy,appointedtolabourtogetheramongsttherapidlyincreasingchurchinthelargeheathentown;andmarkwellthefact,thattheApostledoesnotsay,“TowhichIappointedyou,”or“towhichTimothyappointedyou,”butheregardstheappointmentasfromGodHimself,andsays,“WhereoftheHolyGhosthathmadeyouoverseers.”

Again:itisnottheofficeoftheministertoforgivesins.IfourLord,inHiswordsofJohnxx.23,hadreallyconnectedsuchapowerwiththeministryofreconciliation,itismostextraordinarythatinallthemanyportionsoftheNewTestamentwhichrelatetotheministrythereisnoallusiontoit.TherearethreewholeEpistlesdirectedexclusivelytothechiefpastorsoftheChurch,besidesseveraladdressestopresbytersbothintheActsandEpistles;andisitnotamostremarkablefact,thatthereisnotasingleallusioninanyoneofthesepassagesorepistlestotheforgivenessofsins,asformingaportionoftheministryofreconciliation?Therearefulldirectionsrespectingpreaching,praying,reproving,instructing,andbehaviourtoallthedifferentclassesoftheflock,butofforgivenessofsinbytheminister,notonewordcanyoufindanywhere;andyetforgivenessitselfisthegreatsubjectofthep.58wholeNewTestament.Butitisalwaystracedatonce,withoutanyintermediatemediation,totheLordHimself.ItisalwaysascribedtoHisblood,Hisredemption,andHisgrace,andisneveronceconnectedinanywaywithanypowerofforgivenessbestowedbyapriest.Iamnotnowdwellingonanyoneparticularpassage,butratherontheomissionofthewholesubjectfromthewordofGod;andIcannotbutthinkthatthatomissionisaproof,beyondcontradiction,thattheApostles,writingbyinspiration,didnotunderstandourLordasteachinginthesewordsthattheforgivenessofsinbyapriestformedanypartoftheministryofreconciliation.

IverilybelievethatthefactofthisDivineappointmentoftheministryistoooftenforgotten;andthattherebyGod’speople—andmoreparticularlyGod’sfaithfulministers—oftenmissthegreatencouragementtobederivedfromit.ThereisatendencyinsomemindstosupposethatGodgivesaspecialblessingonirregularefforts,andthatthestatedministryofGod’swordinchurchisnotaccompaniedbythesameblessingasthepreachingoflaymenintown-halls,iron-rooms,andtheatres.GodforbidthatIshouldspeakwiththesmallestdisrespectoftheseirregularefforts,forIrejoiceinthezealofthosewhomakethem,andIfirmlybelievethatinmanycasesGodhasgreatlyblessedthem;sothat,ifonlythesegentlemenwouldbutbecontenttoactwithGod’sappointedp.51ministry,insteadoftakingtheirowncourseentirelyindependentofit,Ibelievewemight,withgreatadvantagetoourselvesandourpeople,availourselvesoftheirdevotednessandpower.ButitwouldbeasintobelievethatGod’sblessingislimitedinanywaytothatwhichisirregular;thattheonlyfleeceonwhichthedewfailstodistilisthatwhichHeHimselfhasplacedtocatchit.IfHeHimselfhasgivenusourministry,ifHehasmadeusoverseersoftheflock,itwouldbedoubtingthefundamentalprinciplesofDivinefidelitytobelievethathavingcalledus,havingplacedus,andhavingHimselfgivenusourgreatcommission,Hewouldleaveustostruggleonalone,untaught,unaided,andunblessedbythepresenceandpoweroftheHolyGhost.WemayapplytotheministrywhatSt.PaulsaystotheChristian,— “FaithfulisHethatcallethyou,whoalsowilldoit;”andallofus,whetherministersorpeople,whilewelookforgreatgifts,greatblessings,andgreatresults,mayrestassuredthatGodisfaithful,andwillneverleavethosewhomHeHimselfhasappointedforHiswork.

Wesee,then,thattheministryofreconciliationisneitherbysacrifice,norbypriestlyforgiveness;butwehavestilltoconsiderbywhatmeansthegreatworkiscarriedon.Sometimesitwillbenecessarytoapplyittoindividuals,whentheconscienceistroubledbytheconvictionofsin.OurChurchalludestothisintwopassagesoftenreferredto.ThefirstisfromthecloseoftheinvitationtotheLord’sSupper,— “AndbecauseitisrequisitethatnomanshouldcometotheHolyCommunionbutwithafulltrustinGod’smercy,andwithaquietconscience;therefore,iftherebeanyofyou,whobythismeanscannotquiethisownconscienceherein,butrequirethfurthercounselorcomfort,lethimcometome,ortosomeotherdiscreetandlearnedministerofGod’sword,andopenhisgrief:thatbytheministryofGod’sholywordhemayreceivethebenefitofabsolution,togetherwithghostlycounselandadvice,tothequietingofhisconscience,andavoidingofallscrupleanddoubtfulness.”

Butnow,believingthatthereisnochangewhateverinthebreadandwine—thatthebreadremainsbread,andthewinewine,whatshallwesayofthepracticeofadoringthebreadasGodHimself?Whatcanwesayofit?Whatisourdutytosayofit?Idoubtnotthatsomemaythinkmeveryuncharitableandbigoted,butthesearedaysinwhichthetruthmustbespoken,andthattruthIfirmlybelievetobethatsuchworshipisidolatry.Idonotdoubtthatmanyaresincereandconscientiousinadoptingit.Butthatdoesnottouchthequestion.Sinceritydoesnotprovetruth.AretherenonesincerewhentheysacrificetheirlivesunderthecarofJuggernaut?WasnotSaulofTarsussincerewhenhepersecutedtheLordJesusinthepersonsofHispeople?IfullyadmitlikewisethattheworshipmayinsomebebasedonadeepsenseofloveandreverenceforourblessedLord.But,again,thatdoesnottouchthequestion.Ifitisbread,itisidolatrytoworshipitasGod.Ifitbestillalifelesswafer,itisidolatrytoadoreitasalivingSaviour.GodforbidthatIshouldspeakharshlyofmanywhohavesetusanexampleofself-denial;andp.16itisinnoharshspiritthatIspeakasIdo.Weshouldratherfeelthemosttendercompassionforconscientiouspersons,whohavebeenthusmisled.Butwhateverwemaythinkofmotives,itisimpossibletoalterthefacts,andIseenothowwecanavoidtheconclusionthatsuchworshipisanawfulsininthesightofGod.ItisalmostimpossibletoturnasidethesternreproofofGodbytheministryofHisprophets,Isa.xliv.16,17:“Heburnethpartthereofinthefire;withpartthereofheeatethflesh;heroastethroast,andissatisfied:yea,hewarmethhimself,andsaith,Aha,Iamwarm,Ihaveseenthefire:Andtheresiduethereofhemakethagod,evenhisgravenimage:hefallethdownuntoit,andworshippethit,andprayethuntoit,andsaith,Deliverme;forthouartmygod.”
