2.Butthesacrificegoesfarther,andinvolvesthededicationofourpowerstotheLord’smostsacredservice.Thetextimpliesthiswhenitsays,“Presentyourbodiesalivingsacrifice,holyandacceptableuntoGod,whichisyourreasonableservice.”Thereisclearly,therefore,tobeservice,—aserviceinvolvingtheactiveuseofhumanpowers.Insomecasesthebodyhasbeenactuallysurrenderedtobleed,orburn,inmartyrdom.ManyanoblemanofGodhasgivenhisbodytobeburntratherthanacknowledgethedoctrineoftheMass.Tothis,however,wearenotcalled.Butstilltheremaybesacrificewithoutmartyrdom,dedicationwithoutdeath,andsuchasurrenderofthelivingpowersasmaycorrespondtothedescription,“Thattheywhichliveshouldnothenceforthliveuntothemselves,butuntoHimthatdiedp.38forthem,androseagain.”Thisisthesecretofthemissionaryspirit;thisitiswhichhasledsomeofthenoblestyoungmeninourUniversitiestoabandonallhomeprospects,andtodevotetheirwholelivestothegreatworkofproclaimingChristindistantlands.This,again,isthespiritthatatthispresenttimeisstirringthousandsofourownpeopleathome,devotedmenanddevotedwomen,tospendtheirliveslabouringforGod,helpingthepoor,comfortingtheafflicted,nursingthesick,andstrivingineverypossiblewaytomakeknownthesweetnessofthesacredNamewhichhasbroughtlifeandpeacetotheirownsouls.

WestudiedlastSundaytheoneperfectandfinalsacrificemadeforthesinsofthewholeworld,whenourLordJesusChristcompletedourpropitiationonthecross.Wefoundthatthatsacrificedifferedfromthoseoftheceremoniallaw,inthegreatfactthatitwasonceandforever;thatitwassoperfect,socomplete,sofullysufficienttosatisfythewholeclaimofthelaw,thatwhenitwasonceofferedtherewasnoplaceleftforrepetition,perpetuation,oraddition.Theveilofthetemplewasthenrentfromthetoptothebottom,andtherewasnospaceleftforanyfurtherrending.TheLordhimselfsaid,“Itisfinished;”sothewholewasdone,anddoneforever.I.Thecontrast.
