OurcriticsarenotcontentwithbringingupAristotleasanauthorityonthemetaphysicalcontroversiesofthepresentday,andreadingintohimtheoriesofwhichheneverdreamed:279theyproceedtocredithimwithmodernopinionswhichhewouldhaveemphaticallyrepudiated,andmodernmethodswhichdirectlyreversehisscientificteaching.ThusSirA.GranttakesadvantageofanambiguityinthewordMatter,asusedrespectivelybyAristotleandbycontemporarywriters,toclaimhissupportforthepeculiartheoriesofProf.Ferrier;althoughtheStagiritehasrecordedhisbeliefintherealityandindependenceofmaterialobjects(ifnotofwhathecalledmatter)withapositivenesswhichonewouldhavethoughtleftnopossibilityofmisunderstandinghim.168AndMr.WallacesaysthatAristotle‘recognisesthegenesisofthingsbyevolutionanddevelopment;’astatementwhich,standingwhereitdoes,andwithnomorequalificationsthanareaddedtoit,wouldmakeanyreadernotversedinthesubjectthinkoftheStagiriteratherasaforerunnerofMr.DarwinandMr.HerbertSpencer,thanastheintellectualancestoroftheiropponents;while,onasubsequentoccasion,hequotesapassageaboutthevariationsofplantsunderdomestication,fromaworkconsideredtobeun-Aristotelianbythebestcritics,apparentlywithnootherobjectthanthatoffindingapieceofDarwinisminhisauthor.169Doctrineslikethese,ifconsistentlycarriedout,wouldhaveutterlydestroyedsomuchofmoralityasdependsonthesocialsanction;while,byinculcatingtheabsoluteindifferenceof44externalactions,theymightultimatelyhaveparalysedtheindividualconscienceitself.ButtheStoicswerenotconsistent.Unlikesomemodernmoralists,whoarereadytoforgiveeveryinjurysolongastheyarenotthemselvesthevictims,ourphilosopherswereunsparingintheirdenunciationsofwrong-doing;anditisverylargelytotheirindignantproteststhatweareindebtedforourknowledgeofthecorruptionprevalentinRomansocietyundertheEmpire.Itmayevenbecontendedthat,inthisrespect,ourjudgmenthasbeenunfairlybiassed.ThepicturedrawnbytheStoics,orbywriterstrainedundertheirinfluence,seemstohavebeentooheavilychargedwithshadow;andbutforthearchaeologicalevidenceweshouldnothaveknownhowmuchgenuinehumanaffectionlayconcealedinthoselowersocialstratawhoserecordscanonlybestudiedontheirtombs.99ItwasamongtheseclassesthatChristianityfoundthereadiestacceptance,simplybecauseitgaveasupernaturalsanctiontohabitsandsentimentsalreadymadefamiliarbythespontaneoustendenciesofanunwarlikerégime.

SuchisthemildandconciliatorymodeoftreatmentatfirstadoptedbyPlatoindealingwiththeprincipalrepresentativeoftheSophists—Protagoras.IntheDialoguewhichbearshisnamethefamoushumanistispresentedtousasaprofessorofpopularunsystematisedmorality,provingbyavarietyofpracticalargumentsandingeniousillustrationsthatvirtuecanbetaught,andthatthepreservationofsocialorderdependsuponthepossibilityofteachingit;butunwillingto188goalongwiththereasoningsbywhichSocratesshowstheapplicabilityofrigorouslyscientificprinciplestoconduct.PlatohasheretakenuponesideoftheSocraticethics,anddevelopeditintoacompleteandself-consistenttheory.ThedoctrineinculcatedisthatformofutilitarianismtowhichMr.Sidgwickhasgiventhenameofegoistichedonism.Wearebroughttoadmitthatvirtueisonebecausethevariousvirtuesreducethemselvesinthelastanalysistoprudence.Itisassumedthathappiness,inthesenseofpleasureandtheabsenceofpain,isthesoleendoflife.Dutyisidentifiedwithinterest.Moralityisacalculusforcomputingquantitiesofpleasureandpain,andallvirtuousactionisameansforsecuringamaximumoftheonetogetherwithaminimumoftheother.Ethicalscienceisconstituted;itcanbetaughtlikemathematics;andsofartheSophistsareright,buttheyhavearrivedatthetruthbyapurelyempiricalprocess;whileSocrates,whoprofessestoknownothing,bysimplyfollowingthedialecticimpulsestrikesoutageneralisationwhichatonceconfirmsandexplainstheirposition;yetfromself-sufficiencyorprejudicetheyrefusetoagreewithhimintakingtheirstandonitsonlylogicalfoundation.

ModernadmirersofAristotlelabourtoprovethathiserrorswereinevitable,andbelongedmoretohisagethantohimself;thatwithoutthemechanicalappliancesofmoderntimessciencecouldnotbecultivatedwithanyhopeofsuccess.ButwhatarewetosaywhenwefindthatononepointafteranotherthetrueexplanationhadalreadybeensurmisedbyAristotle’spredecessorsorcontemporaries,onlytobescornfullyrejectedbyAristotlehimself?Theirhypothesesmayoftenhavebeenveryimperfect,andsupportedbyinsufficientevidence;butitmusthavebeensomethingmorethanchancewhichalwaysledhimwrongwhentheyweresooftenright.Tobeginwith,theinfinityofspaceisnotevennow,norwilliteverbe,establishedbyimprovedinstrumentsofobservationandmeasurement;itisdeducedbyaverysimpleprocessofreasoning,ofwhichDemocritusandotherswerecapable,whileAristotleapparentlywasnot.Herejectstheideabecauseitisinconsistentwithcertainveryarbitraryassumptionsanddefinitionsofhisown,whereasheshouldhave313rejectedthembecausetheywereinconsistentwithit.Hefurtherrejectstheideaofavacuum,andwithittheatomictheory,entirelyonàpriorigrounds,although,eveninthethenexistingstateofknowledge,atomismexplainedvariousphenomenainaperfectlyrationalmannerwhichhecouldonlyexplainbyunmeaningornonsensicalphrases.195Ithadbeenalreadymaintained,inhistime,thattheapparentmovementsoftheheavenlybodieswereduetotherotationoftheearthonitsownaxis.196HadAristotleacceptedthistheoryonecanimaginehowhighlyhissagacitywouldhavebeenextolled.Wemay,therefore,fairlytakehisrejectionofitasaproofofblindadherencetoold-fashionedopinions.Whenhearguesthatnoneoftheheavenlybodiesrotate,becausewecanseethatthemoondoesnot,asisevidentfromheralwaysturningthesamesidetous,197nothingisneededbutthesimplestmathematicstodemonstratethefallacyofhisreasoning.OthershadsurmisedthattheMilkyWaywasacollectionofstars,andthatcometswerebodiesofthesamenatureasplanets.Aristotleissatisfiedthatbothareappearanceslikemeteors,andtheauroraborealis—causedbythefrictionofouratmosphereagainstthesolidaetheraboveit.Asimilaroriginisascribedtotheheatandlightderivedfromthesunandstars;foritwouldbederogatorytothedignityofthoseluminariestosuppose,withAnaxagoras,thattheyareformedofanythingsofamiliarandperishableasfire.Onthecontrary,theyconsistofpureaetherlikethespheresonwhichtheyarefixedasprotuberances;though314howsuchanarrangementcanco-existwithabsolutecontactbetweeneachsphereandthatnextbelowit,orhowtheeffectsoffrictioncouldbetransmittedthroughsuchenormousthicknessesofsolidcrystal,isleftunexplained.198ByahappyanticipationofRoemer,Empedoclesconjecturedthatthetransmissionoflightoccupiedacertaintime:Aristotledeclaresittobeinstantaneous.199

OnAlexander’sdeparturefortheEast,AristotlereturnedtoAthens,wherehenowplacedhimselfattheheadofanewphilosophicalschool.Theensuingperiodofthirteenyears288wasfullyoccupiedbythedeliveryofpubliclectures,andbythecompositionofthoseencyclopaedicwritingswhichwillpreservehismemoryforever,along,perhaps,withmanyotherswhichhavenotsurvived.LikeAnaxagoras,hewasnotallowedtoendhisdaysinthecityofhisadoption.HisyouthfulattacksonIsocrateshadprobablymadehimmanyenemiesamongthatrhetor’spupils.ItissupposedbyGrote,butwarmlydisputedbyZeller,thathistrenchantcriticismsonPlatohadexcitedasimilaranimosityamongthesectariesoftheAcademy.178Anyhow,circumstanceshadunavoidablyassociatedhimwiththedetestedMacedonianparty,althoughhisposition,asametic,orresidentalien,debarredhimfromtakinganyactivepartinpolitics.WithAlexander’sdeaththestormbrokeloose.AchargewastrumpedupagainstAristotle,onthestrengthofhisunluckypoeminhonourofHermeias,whichwasdescribedasaninsulttoreligion.ThatsuchanaccusationshouldbechosenischaracteristicofAthenianbigotry,evenshouldtherebenotruthinthestorythatcertainphilosophicalopinionsofhiswerelikewisesingledoutforprosecution.Beforethecasecameonfortrial,Aristotleavailedhimselfoftheusualprivilegeallowedonsuchoccasions,andwithdrewtoChalcis,inorder,ashesaid,thattheAtheniansneednotsinasecondtimeagainstphilosophy.Buthisconstitution,naturallyafeebleone,wasnearlywornout.Ayearafterwardshesuccumbedtoastomachcomplaint,aggravated,ifnotproduced,byincessantmentalapplication.Hiscontemporary,Demosthenes,perishedaboutthesametime,andatthesameage,sixty-two.Withinlittlemorethanatwelvemonththeworldhadlostitsthreegreatestmen;andafterthreecenturiesofuninterruptedglory,Hellaswasleftunrepresentedbyasingleindividualofcommandinggenius.Tomakeityieldabounteousharvest,nor
