Itwasnaturalthatonewhorangedwithsuchconsummatemasteryoverthewholeworldofapparentreality,shouldbelieveinnootherreality;thatforhimtruthshouldonly319meanthesystematisationofsenseandlanguage,ofopinion,andofthought.Thevisibleorderofnaturewaspresenttohisimaginationinsuchprecisedeterminationandfulnessofdetailthatitresistedanyattempthemighthavemadetoconceiveitunderadifferentform.Eachofhisconclusionswassupportedbyanalogiesfromeveryotherdepartmentofenquiry,becausehecarriedthepeculiarlimitationsofhisthinkingfacultywithhimwhereverheturned,andunconsciouslyaccommodatedeverysubjecttotheframeworkwhichtheyimposed.Theclearnessofhisideasnecessitatedtheuseofsharply-drawndistinctions,whichpreventedthefreeplayofgeneralisationandfruitfulinterchangeofprinciplesbetweenthedifferentsciences.Andweshallhaveoccasiontoshowhereafter,that,whenheattemptedtocombinerivaltheories,itwasdonebyplacingtheminjuxtapositionratherthanbymutualinterpenetration.Again,withhisvividperceptions,itwasimpossibleforhimtobelieveinthejustificationofanymethodclaimingtosupersede,oreventosupplement,theirauthority.HencehewashardlylessopposedtotheatomismofDemocritusthantothescepticismofProtagorasortheidealismofPlato.Hence,also,hisdislikeforallexplanationswhichassumedthattherewerehiddenprocessesatworkbelowthesurfaceofthings,eventakingsurfaceinitsmostliteralsense.Thus,indiscussingthequestionwhytheseaissalt,hewillnotacceptthetheorythatriversdissolveoutthesaltfromthestratathroughwhichtheypass,andcarryitdowntothesea,becauseriver-watertastesfresh;andpropoundsinitssteadtheutterlyfalsehypothesisofadrysalineevaporationfromtheearth’ssurface,whichhesupposestobesweptseawardsbythewind.205Eveninhisownespecialprovinceofnaturalhistorythesametendencyleadshimastray.Heassertsthatthespiderthrowsoffitswebfromthesurfaceofitsbodylikeaskin,insteadofevolvingitfromwithin,asDemocritushadtaught.206Thesamethinkerhad320endeavouredtoprovebyanalogicalreasoningthattheinvertebrateanimalsmusthaveviscera,andthatonlytheirextrememinutenesspreventsusfromperceivingthem;aviewwhichhissuccessorwillnotadmit.207Infact,whereverthelinebetweenthevisibleandtheinvisibleiscrossed,Aristotle’spowersaresuddenlyparalysed,asifbyenchantment.Hisanalysisofindividualitywasthefirststepinthisdirection.Wehaveseenthathetreatsdefinitionasaprocessofgradualspecification,beginningwiththemostgeneralnotions,andworkingdownbysuccessivedifferentiationstothemostparticular.Now,thecompletedconceptionisitselftheintegrationofallthesedifferences,thebondofunionholdingthemtogether.Turningtoanantitheticalorderofideas,tothematerialsubstanceofwhichbodiesarecomposed,anditsvarioustransformations,wefindhimworkingoutthesameveinofthought.AccordingtotheAristotelianchemistry,anultimateindeterminateunknowablesomethingclothesitselfwithoneorotheroftheopposingattributes,dryandmoist,hotandcold;andwhentwoofthesearecombined,manifestsitselftooursensesasoneofthefourelements.Theelementscombineinaparticularmannertoformhomogeneousanimaltissues,andtheseagainareunitedintoheterogeneousorgans,whichtogetherconstitutethelivingbody.Here,then,wehavetwoanalogousseriesofspecifications—oneconceptualandleadingdownfromtheabstracttotheconcrete,theotherphysical,andleadingupfromthevague,thesimple,andthehomogeneous,tothedefinite,thecomplex,andtheheterogeneous.Aristotleembracesbothprocessesunderasinglecomprehensivegeneralisation.Hedescribeseachofthemasthecontinuousconversionofa346possibilityintoanactuality.Forthesakeofgreaterclearness,letustakethelibertyofsubstitutingmodernscientifictermsforhiscumbrousandobsoleteclassifications.Weshallthensaythatthegeneralnotion,livingthing,containsunderitthetwolessgeneralnotions—plantandanimal.Ifweonlyknowofanygivenobjectthatithaslife,thereisimpliedthepossibilityofitsbeingeithertheoneortheother,butnotbothtogether.Ondeterminingittobe(say)ananimal,weactualiseoneofthepossibilities.Buttheactualisationisonlyrelative,andimmediatelybecomesthepossibilityofbeingeitheravertebrateoraninvertebrateanimal.Theactualityvertebratebecomesthepossibilityofviviparousoroviparous,andsoonthroughsuccessivedifferentiationsuntilwecome(say)toaman.Nowletusbeginatthematerialend.Hereareamassofmolecules,which,intheiractualstateareonlycarbon,nitrogen,andsoforth.Buttheyarepotentialstarch,gluten,water,oranyotherarticleoffoodthatmightbenamed;forunderfavourableconditionstheywillcombinetoformit.Onceactualisedassuch,theyarepossibleblood-cells;thesearepossibletissues;these,again,possibleorgans,andlastlywecometotheconsensusofvitalfunctions,whichisaman.Whattherawmaterialistothefinishedproduct,thatarethepartstotheentireorganism,theelementstothecompound,thegenustothespecies,andsuchinitsverywidestsenseispotencytorealisation,δ?ναμι?to?ντελ?χεια,throughouttheuniverseofgrowthanddecay.246

MeanwhiletheparallelismbetweenThoughtandExtensionwasnotexhaustedbytheidentificationjustanalysed.Extensionwasnotonlyaseriesofmovements;itstillremainedanexpressionforco-existenceandadjacency.412Spinoza,therefore,felthimselfobligedtosupplyThoughtwithacorrespondinglycontinuousquality.Itisherethathischieforiginalitylies,herethathehasbeenmostcloselyfollowedbythephilosophyofourowntime.Mind,hedeclares,isanattributeeverywhereaccompanyingmatter,co-extensiveandco-infinitewithspace.Ourownanimationisthesumortheresultantofananimationclingingtoeveryparticlethatentersintothecompositionofourbodies.Whenourthoughtsareaffectedbyanexternalimpulse,tosupposethatthisimpulseproceedsfromanythingmaterialisadelusion;itisproducedbythemindbelongingtothebodywhichactsonourbody;althoughinwhatsensethisprocessistobeunderstoodremainsamystery.Spinozahasclearlyexplainedthedoctrineofanimalautomatism,andshownittobeperfectlyconceivable;569buthehasentirelyomittedtoexplainhowtheparallelinfluenceofonethought(orfeeling)onanotheristobeunderstood;foralthoughthistooisspokenofasacausalrelation,itseemstobequitedifferentfromthelogicalconcatenationdescribedastheinfiniteintellectofGod;andtosupposethatideafollowsfromidealikemovementfrommovementwouldamounttoacompletematerialisationofmind;whileourphilosopherwouldcertainlyhaverepudiatedMr.ShadworthHodgson’stheory,thatstatesofconsciousnessareonlyconnectedthroughtheirextendedsubstratum,asthesegmentsofamosaicpictureareheldtogetherbytheunderlyingsurfaceofmasonry.NorcanweadmitthatSpinozaentertainedthetheory,nowsopopular,accordingtowhichextensionandconsciousnessaremerelydifferentaspectsofasinglereality.Forthiswouldimplythatthesubstancewhichtheymanifesthadanexistenceofitsownapartfromitsattributes;whereasSpinozamakesitconsistoftheattributes,thatistosay,identifiesitwiththeirtotality.Weareforced,then,toconcludethatthepropositiondeclaringthoughtandextensiontobethesamething570hasno413othermeaningthanthattheyareconnectedbythedoubleanalogywhichwehaveendeavouredtoexplain.
