p.64Itisclearataglance,thatthereisnoallusionineitherofthesepassagestogeneralorhabitualconfession;andthatthecasecontemplatedisthatofapersontroubledbysomeparticularsinweighingontheconscience,andkeepingthesoulfrompeace.Itisjustinsuchacasethattheministryofthewordisrequiredforthehelpoftheindividual;andthatsomethingmoreiswantedthanthegeneralpreachingofthetruth.SuchapersonrequirestheGospeltobeappliedtohisownparticularanxiety,inorderthathemaybeassuredofGod鈥 檚forgivenessofthatparticularsinwhichkeepshissoulintrouble.ItisthisassurancewhichiscalledinthePrayer-book鈥 渁bsolution.鈥 漈hereisavastdifferencebetweenajudicialactofforgiveness,andadeclarationorassuranceoftheforgivenessbyGod.Thus,to鈥 渁bsolve鈥 漣snotto鈥 渇orgive,鈥 漛uttoassurethetroubledheartofthefullforgiveness,freelygranted,bytheLordHimself.[64]NothingcanbeclearerthanthisdistinctionintheabsolutionintheservicefortheVisitationoftheSick.鈥 淥urLordJesusChrist,whohathleftpowertoHisChurchtoabsolveallsinnerswhotrulyp.65repentandbelieveinHim,ofHisgreatmercyforgivetheethineoffences:andbyHisauthority,committedtome,Iabsolvetheefromallthysins,IntheNameoftheFather,andoftheSon,andoftheHolyGhost.Amen.鈥 漌eliveinveryanxioustimes.Differentphasesoferrorarefollowingeachotherwithgreatrapidity,likewavesbeforethegaleonastormysea.Averyshorttimeagoweweredeeplydistressedbythescepticaltendenciesofcertainablewriters,鈥 攖endenciesstillinrapidprogress,thoughpublicattentionhasbeenrecentlydirectedintoanotherchannel.NowwearestartledbytheopendeclarationofRomishdoctrine,andopenpracticeofRomishceremonial,bymenwhohaveacceptedofficeinachurchwhichdeclarestheseverydoctrinestobe鈥 渂lasphemousfablesanddangerousdeceits.鈥 滻thasbecome,therefore,absolutelynecessarythatwep.4shouldunderstandthereasonswhytheChurchofEnglandhasseparatedfromthatofRome,andwhyitisthatweraiseourvoiceagainsttheseinnovations.Iamwellawarethatsuchasubjectisdistastefultomanyminds.Someshrinkfromthetroubleofcontroversy,andwouldratherhavetheirwholeattentionfixedonthatwhichtheyfindhelpfultotheirownsouls.Othersthinkituncharitable;andmaintainthat,providedapersonbeconscientiousinhispractice,weneedfeelnoanxietyaboutthetruthorerrorofhiscreed.ButIampersuadedthatitwillnotdosotodealwithtruth.Thesearedaysinwhichwemustknowwhatwebelieve,andwhywebelieveit.Ifwedesiretostandfast,wemustknowourstanding-ground.AndifwedesiretoseeouryoungpeoplegrowingupaswitnessesfortheLordJesusChrist,wemustnotmerelystrivetocallforthinthemareligionoffeeling,butmusttraintheminsoundScripturalprinciples,thattheymaybeabletogiveananswertoeveryonewhoaskeththemareasonofthehopethatisinthem.TheRomishquestionisforceduponusbytheenormouseffortswhichtheChurchofRomeismakingfortherecoveryofitsancientsupremacyinEngland;andImustsay,andsayitwiththep.5deepestgriefandhumiliation,Ifearwehavebeenbetrayed,inmanycases,bymenwho,asclergymenoftheChurchofEngland,havepledgedthemselvestotheveryprinciplestheyarebetraying.Itishightime,therefore,thatweshouldunderstandthegroundofoursolemnprotestagainstRome,andthatweshouldnotmerelystudytruthinitssimplicity,butstudyitlikewiseinitsoppositiontoRomisherror.Ipurpose,however,Godhelpingme,todirectyourthoughtsthismorningtoonepointofthecontroversy.Icannotattemptthemanypointsonwhichweareatissue.Iconfinemyself,therefore,toone;andthatis,theteachingofthewordofGodwithreferencetoourexaltedSaviour,inoppositiontotheteachingofRomeinthedoctrineoftransubstantiation.MaytheLorddirectourstudies,andwriteHisowntruthmostdeeplyonourhearts!

TRANSUBSTANTIATION.

II.Such,then,isthecontrast;andnowletusturn,inthesecondplace,tothereasonofit.Whywerethoseancientsacrificessooftenrepeated?andwhywasoursonceandforever?Thesamepassagethatbringsoutthecontrastexplainsthereasonofit;andthereasonisthat,p.24inthemselves,theyhavenosavingpower,andthatourshas.Theywereineffectualfortheblottingoutofsin,buttheoneofferingofourBlessedLordwasperfectlyeffectualintheverypointwheretheyfailed.Therewasasgreatacontrastinrespectofefficiencyastherewasinrespectoffrequency;and,infact,therepetitionwastheresultofweakness,astheonenesswastheresultofcompletesufficiency.Thisinsufficiencyisplacedintwopointsofviewinthechapter,forwearetheretaught,first,thatthesesacrificescouldnottakeawaysin,and,secondly,thattheycouldnotsatisfytheconscience.

Ineveryworkcarriedonbymanweareperfectlycertaintomeetwithhumaninfirmity,andhumanerror;andtheworkoftheministryformsnoexceptiontotherule.Itiscarriedonbycommonmen,withcommonfleshandblood,exposedtothecommontemptationsofcommonlife,sothatwearesuretofindinitthecommonfailuresofourcommonhumanity.Yet,withallthis,itfillsamostimportantplaceinthelifeofallofus.Itnotonlyimpartsadistinctivecharactertoourpublicworship,butitreachesourhomelife;sothatthereisnotafamilyinaparishthatisnot,insomewayorother,moreorlessaffectedbytheministryinp.47theChurch.Theinfluencemaynotalwaysbeforgood,butitalwaysexists.Insomecasesitmaybesimplynegative,andactuallydoharmbynotdoinggood.Insomecasesitmaybepositivelymischievous,aswhenitismadethemeansforthedisseminationofdeadlyerror.WhileinmanyitismadeGod鈥 檚meansforconferringincalculableblessings;sothatthroughittheyoungareinstructed,thecarelessawakened,inquirersdirectedtotheLordJesusChrist,andthechildrenofGodconfirmedinfaithandarousedtoholyenergyfortheirLord.Thepositionofaclergymanissuchthattheinfluenceofhisministryissuretobefeltthroughouthisparish.Hehasthesacredprivilegeofleadingtheworshipofthereligiousportionofhispeople.Theyareallbroughtintocontactwithhisoffice,andallare,somewayorother,affectedbythemannerinwhichthatofficeisfulfilled.1.Thewordsthemselvesprovethattheyarefigurative.Turnto1Cor.xi.25,whereweread:鈥 淭hiscupisthenewtestamentinmyblood.鈥 滻sthereanyoneblindenoughtosupposethatthecupwaschangedintothenewtestament?Thewordsmustmeanthatthecupwasanemblemofthecovenant.WhenourLordsaid,鈥 淚amthevine,鈥 濃 淚amthedoor,鈥 濃 淚amthebreadoflife,鈥 滺edidnotmeanthatHewaschangedintoavine,intoadoor,orintobread,butthatallthesethingswereemblemsofHiswork.SoHesaysofthecup,thatitisanemblemofthecovenant;andifwewouldbeconsistentinterpreters,wemustbelievealsoofthebreadthatitwasdeclaredtobeanemblemofthebody.
