Then,again,withtheplacetherehasbeenacompletechangeinHisemployment.HewasheretofoundHiskingdomandtomakeatonement.Heistheretocarryouttheresultsofthatatonementandtoreign.Hisofficewasrepresentedbythehighpriestofold,whofirstintheoutercourtofferedthesacrifice,andp.7afterwardswentinbeforethemercy-seattosprinkletheblood.SoChristJesushereonearthofferedHimselfasthesacrifice,andnowHeisgoneintotheholyofholiestheretopresentthebloodbeforethemercy-seatofGod.ThusHeisdescribedbySt.Peter(Acts,v.31)asbeingexaltedtobea“PrinceandaSaviour;”aPrince,becauseHeisexaltedasKingofkingsandLordoflords;aSaviour,becauseasalivingfriend,Heissavingthosewhom,whenonearth,HeredeemedbyHisblood.Everypassage,therefore,whichdescribesHiminHispresentcondition,representsHimasinthepossessionoflivingpower.SometimesHeissaidtobereigning,as(1Cor.xv.25),“HemustreigntillHehathputallenemiesunderHisfeet.”SometimesweseeHimasthePriest(Heb.iv.14),“SeeingthenthatwehaveagreatHighPriest,thatispassedintotheheavens,JesustheSonofGod.”SometimesHeistheAdvocate(1John,ii.1,2),“IfanymansinwehaveanAdvocatewiththeFather,JesusChristtherighteous;”andsometimesHeisthelovingFriend,watchingthestrugglesofHisfaithfuldisciples,andwaitingtowelcomeHisdyingservantinthesolemnmomentsofhisroughandstormymartyrdom.p.8“Behold,”saidStephen,“Iseetheheavensopened,andtheSonofManstandingattherighthandofGod;”andso,havingseenit,hefollowedupthevisionbythedyingprayer,“LordJesus,receivemyspirit.”(Acts,vii.56.)

Inthispresentworldweareinamixedcondition,andhowevertrulywemaybewalkingwithGod,thereistheoldmanandtheoldnatureleft.ItisjustthesamewithusasitwasofoldwithCanaan.Israelhadtakenpossession,buttheCanaaniteswerestillintheland.So,evenwhentheLordJesushastakenpossessionoftheheart,therearesinsstillabidingthere—tempers,lusts,covetousness,selfishness,pride,andathousandothers—someprevailinginonecharacterandsomeinanother.NowofallthesetheChristianmanmustbepreparedtomakeasacrifice—histemper,hispride,hisambition,hiscovetousness,hisself-love;hemustbepreparedtobringalltothealtar,withoutmercyandwithoutreserve.Thus,inCol.iii.5,St.PauladdressesthosewhoarerisenwithChrist,andsays,“Mortifytherefore,”orputtodeath,orsacrifice,“yourmemberswhichareoftheflesh:fornication,uncleanness,inordinateaffection,evilconcupiscence,andcovetousness,whichisidolatry.”Thereisnooccasiontobeshutupwithinthewallsofanunneryforthis;norwillthewallsofanunneryp.37intheleasthelpustoit,fortheyarejustaseffectualinshuttingsininasinshuttingitout.Hereisworkforhomelife,andforallclassesinhomelife—forhusbandsandwives,parentsandchildren,mastersandservants:weallhaveourgreattemptations,soweallhavetothrowourselvesheartandsoulintothegreatstruggle,andwithanunsparinghanddealresolutelywithbesettingsin.

II.Such,then,isthecontrast;andnowletusturn,inthesecondplace,tothereasonofit.Whywerethoseancientsacrificessooftenrepeated?andwhywasoursonceandforever?Thesamepassagethatbringsoutthecontrastexplainsthereasonofit;andthereasonisthat,p.24inthemselves,theyhavenosavingpower,andthatourshas.Theywereineffectualfortheblottingoutofsin,buttheoneofferingofourBlessedLordwasperfectlyeffectualintheverypointwheretheyfailed.Therewasasgreatacontrastinrespectofefficiencyastherewasinrespectoffrequency;and,infact,therepetitionwastheresultofweakness,astheonenesswastheresultofcompletesufficiency.Thisinsufficiencyisplacedintwopointsofviewinthechapter,forwearetheretaught,first,thatthesesacrificescouldnottakeawaysin,and,secondly,thattheycouldnotsatisfytheconscience.

III.Butourthirdquestionstillremains,— “Inwhatway,orbywhatmeans,isthisgreatobjecttobeattained?”Iam,ofcourse,speakingofthehumaninstruments,andnotofthesovereignpowerofGodtheHolyGhost,withoutwhomnothingisstrong,andnothingholy.

Wesee,then,thattheministryofreconciliationisneitherbysacrifice,norbypriestlyforgiveness;butwehavestilltoconsiderbywhatmeansthegreatworkiscarriedon.

2.Thebreadiscalledbread,andthewinewine,afterconsecration,bothbyourLordHimselfandHisApostles.Itfollows,therefore,thatthesubjectoftheministryisonerespectingwhichitisofgreatimportancethatourviewsshouldbescriptural.Andyet,forobviousreasons,itisoneseldompreachedupon.ThegreatobjectoftheservantoftheLordistothrowSelfoutofsight;anditissohardtodisconnecttheofficefromtheofficep.48bearer,thattoolittleisoftensaidabouttheofficefromthefearthattoomuchattentionshouldbedrawntotheman.Itwillbewell,therefore,forustotakethesubjectoftheministryforourcarefulstudythismorning.AndmayGodenablemesotospeak,andyousotohear,thatwemayallreceiveGod’swordinfaith,andmay,together,becompactedasaholypeopleintheLord!

p.21WithallthistheApostlecontraststheoneperfectsacrificeofourblessedLord,madeonthecrossonceandforever.Therearenolessthansixplacesinwhichhebringsoutthisonepoint,andbringsitoutwithsuchclearnessthatitreallyseemsasifthewholepassagewaswrittenasapropheticsafeguardagainstthedoctrineofthemass.InHeb.ix.25,26,hesays:“Noryetthatheshouldofferhimselfoften,asthehighpriestenterethintotheholyplaceeveryyearwithbloodofothers;forthenmustheoftenhavesufferedsincethefoundationoftheworld:butnowonceintheendoftheworldhathheappearedtoputawaysinbythesacrificeofhimself.”Soinvv.27,28,hedrawsacomparisonbetweenthedeathoftheLordJesusandthenaturaldeathofman,andsays:“Asitisappointeduntomenoncetodie,butafterthisthejudgment:soChristwasonceofferedtobearthesinsofmany;anduntothemthatlookforhimshallheappearthesecondtimewithoutsinuntosalvation.”Sothatitwouldbejustasabsurdtoexpectmentodietwice,astobelievethattherecanbeanysecondofferingoftheLordJesusChristforsin.TheonedeaththroughoutmankindisthetypeorpatternoftheoneSacrificeoncep.22madeforsin.So,again,inx.10,weread,— “BythewhichwillwearesanctifiedthroughtheofferingofthebodyofJesusChristonceforall.”Andagain,invv,11,12,St.PaulreturnstothecontrastbetweenourLordandtheJewishpriest,andsays,“Everyprieststandethdailyministeringandofferingoftentimesthesamesacrifices,whichcannevertakeawaysins:butthisman,afterhehadofferedonesacrificeforsinsforever,satdownontherighthandofGod.”Andoncemore,inver.14,hesumsupallbysaying,“ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”Itwouldbeamatterofdeepinteresttostudycarefullythemeaningoftheword“perfected”inthismostimportanttext.Itdoesnotmeanperfectinpersonalholiness,i.e.intheinwardworkoftheSpiritonthesoul;butperfectinjustification:perfect,becausethecursewasperfectlyblottedout,thelawbeingperfectlysatisfied,andthesinner,afterpropitiation,perfectlyfree.Butwemustnotstoptodwellonthatnow,ouronepointatpresentisthatthesacrificeoftheLordJesuswasonce,andforever;andthisismostremarkablybroughtoutinthewords,— “ByoneofferingHehathperfectedforeverthemthataresanctified.”

Itis,ofcourse,impossibletoattemptadiscussionofthewholesubject,sothatwemustconfineourthoughtstothelessonsfromthisonepassage,— “Hehathcommittedtoustheministryofreconciliation;”andtherewillbeinitquitesufficientimportantmatter,asthewordswillsuggestthreemostimportantpoints,—theauthorityoftheministry,theobjectoftheministry,andthemeansbywhichthatobjectisaccomplished.
