Drillingdiffersinprinciplefromalmosteveryotheroperationinmetalcutting.Thetools,insteadofbeingheldanddirectedbyguidesorspindles,aresupportedmainlybythebearingofthecuttingedgesagainstthematerial.

ThereisaproblemastotheprincipleofactioninaBarkerwheel,whichalthoughitmaybeveryclearinascientificsense,remainsapuzzletothemindsofmanywhoarewellversedinmechanics,somecontendingthatthepowerisdirectlyfrompressure,othersthatitisfromthedynamiceffectduetoreaction.Itisoneoftheproblemssodifficulttodeterminebyordinarystandards,thatitservesasamatterofendlessdebatebetweenthosewhoholddifferentviews;andconsideringtheadvantageusuallyderivedfromsuchcontroversies,perhapsthebestmannerofdisposingoftheproblemhereistostatethetwosidesasclearlyaspossible,andleavethereadertodetermineforhimselfwhichhethinksright.Screw-cuttingmachinesmaybedividedintomodificationsasfollows:—(1)Machineswithrunningdiesmountedinwhatiscalledthehead;(2)Machineswithfixeddies,inwhichmotionisgiventotherodorblanktobethreaded;(3)Machineswithexpandingdieswhichopenandreleasethescrewswhenfinishedwithoutrunningback;(4)Machineswithsoliddies,inwhichthescrewshavetobewithdrawnbychangingthemotionofthedrivinggearing;makinginallfourdifferenttypes.

Itisstrange,consideringthesimplicityofconstructionandtheveryimportantofficefilledbymachinesforcuttingonplanesurfaces,thattheywerenotsoonerinventedandappliedinmetalwork.Manymenyetworkingatfinishing,canrememberwhenallflatsurfaceswerechippedandfiled,andthatlongafterenginelatheshadreachedastateofefficiencyandweregenerallyemployed,planingmachineswerenotknown.Thisisnodoubttobeaccountedforinthefactthatreciprocalmovement,exceptthatproducedbycranksoreccentrics,wasunknownorregardedasimpracticableforusefulpurposesuntillateyears,andwhenfinallyapplieditwasthoughtimpracticabletohavesuchmovementsoperateautomatically.Thismayseemquiteabsurdtoevenanapprenticeofthepresenttime,yetsuchreciprocatingmovement,asamechanicalproblem,isbynomeanssosimpleasitmayatfirstappear.
